breezelasbre73 Posted February 16, 2010 #1 Posted February 16, 2010 i was wondering ,do the 83 venture have a petcock,or reserve switch.i have searched the bike over and over.if so where is it.most bike that i have owned have them on the left side, down where its visible
painterman67 Posted February 16, 2010 #2 Posted February 16, 2010 pull the rear foot peg down on the right sidebehing your right leg sitting on the bike. That is where it is on my 91. David
dingy Posted February 16, 2010 #3 Posted February 16, 2010 I think it is only an on - off switch. No reserve setting. At least on my 83. Gary
Monty Posted February 16, 2010 #4 Posted February 16, 2010 Careful, as it is old. When I tried to turn mine, it broke. It was already on, so I just left it alone.
Marcarl Posted February 16, 2010 #5 Posted February 16, 2010 Left side of scooter, hidden behind passenger floor boards. Has on, off and reserve.
dingy Posted February 16, 2010 #6 Posted February 16, 2010 My 83 does not have the notch in the side cover that exposes the petcock. I just looked at parts fiche for 83 - 84 - 85 P/N changed in 84 for the petcock. Mine does not have reserve setting, almost sure. I also don't have the rubber straps that hold side cover on. It has a clip where rubber band is on later models. Gary
MiCarl Posted February 16, 2010 #7 Posted February 16, 2010 Left side of scooter, hidden behind passenger floor boards. Has on, off and reserve. It's left side in Canada. South of the border that's called right side.
skydoc_17 Posted February 16, 2010 #8 Posted February 16, 2010 Dingy is correct about the 83'VR early production run only having the "ON", "OFF" switch. Late 83'VR's on up had the "ON","OFF", "RESERVE" switch. I for one have my switch set on "RESERVE" and never move it. I have replaced about 12 of those switches for other owners. I have seen one switch that was only 11/2 years old break off. This is an "Ugly" job, an usually, when the new switch is installed, it goes on "RESERVE" (or "ON" in Dingy's case) and stays there. But if you want the "Thrill" :crying:of replacing that petcock, have at it. Earl
Ottawa Posted February 16, 2010 #9 Posted February 16, 2010 My 83 had a petcock I believe. I was on the right side under the side cover. My 85 looks like the photos above. The valve didn't move very well so I left it alone. To tell you the truth it had already broke off before I got the bike. Ran the bike till it ran out of gas and know how far I could go. Ran it from Ottawa to well past Montreal with a heavy load. OK I know its more info then you need but this snow is getting to me. I really neeeeed to ride soon.
bongobobny Posted February 16, 2010 #10 Posted February 16, 2010 Gee, I just happen to have a NOS early style (no Reserve) petcock taking up room in my garage if anybody wants it...
Marcarl Posted February 16, 2010 #11 Posted February 16, 2010 It's left side in Canada. South of the border that's called right side....
breezelasbre73 Posted February 16, 2010 Author #12 Posted February 16, 2010 i was doing some plastic work.i was doing some tab replacements.i notice i didnt see it thats why i asked.i read about them breaking off and the hassle of replaceing them.i just wanted to see if it was one
GaryZ Posted February 16, 2010 #13 Posted February 16, 2010 My '85 petcock is missing the knob and I do not know if it is in "reserve" position. CW or CCW or middle? Inquiring minds want to know . . .
GigaWhiskey Posted February 16, 2010 #14 Posted February 16, 2010 Marcal, it is time to wipe the dust off of that bike!
Chris937 Posted June 9, 2010 #15 Posted June 9, 2010 So, I just bought my first Venture (1984), and as I was cleaning it up and detailing it, I broke the knob off of the petcock. I know that it's on "ON", but I would still like a new one. Is this an easy fix, or am I to understadn that it's difficult just to replace that knob? Also, where should I look to find one? ....By the way, it has alll three "ON", "OFF", and "RESERVE" settings. Thanks for any help you can provide.
