Sometimes when i try to start my scoot the lights go dim.Try a few minitues later it will start. Plan on pulling out the starter and cleaning it. thanks. Doug
Sheradan Posted February 11, 2010 #2 Posted February 11, 2010 Is an 83 starter and an 86 starter the same?
93 venture Posted February 11, 2010 #5 Posted February 11, 2010 You also might want to upgrade your battery cables. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1398 If ya need help with making up the cables , i have left over wire from doing mine, just have to get the ends. Think i got the ends at Smiths farm store in Plymouth.
skydoc_17 Posted February 11, 2010 #6 Posted February 11, 2010 Hey Doug, Before you go ripping out that starter you may want to take a look at the right side handlebar switch. This contains your "run/stop" and "starter" switches. Remove the two Phillips Head screws on the bottom of the unit, clean BOTH switches with contact cleaner, and put a "dab" of dielectric grease on the contacts. Next, if you don't plan on upgrading the battery cables in the near future, Remove BOTH battery terminals from the battery, wire brush them, use a dab of dielectric grease on them and reinstall. Next follow the ground terminal down to the right side of the engine, remove the bolt, wire brush BOTH sides of the terminal end, scrape the paint from the engine case, wire brush the bolt and any washers and reinstall. If you are feeling "frisky" do the same thing to the end of the positive cable where it connects to the starter. I have a good used starter, and I can order a rebuild kit and either rebuild yours or rebuild one of the used ones I have here at my shop. If any of this sounds interesting, please feel free to PM me. If you have other questions, PM me as well. Earl
Wizard765 Posted February 11, 2010 #7 Posted February 11, 2010 I was told that a starter from a 2nd gen would fit. I think it was Squeeze. Anyhow if that worked then it would also be a better starter and should be easy to come by.
emtdouggood Posted February 12, 2010 Author #8 Posted February 12, 2010 I am going to try what 93 said and get better wire system. I will pick up some #4 wireand lugs and put it on this week end. Thanks for the imput.
