My preference would be a digital voltage gauge.

 

Amps don't tell you a whole lot about electrical system health. It is just an indication of current flow at the particular point in the system that the gauge was inserted at.

 

Readings will vary at any given time depending on accessories running.

 

You cannot run starter current through 99% of available gauges, so it has to be installed after starter motor circuit.

 

Amp gauge somewhat more involved install.
