Venturous Randy Posted February 7, 2010 #26 Posted February 7, 2010 I've rode the Dragon on a First Gen and a Second Gen.... Skid, did you make the Rooster Tail last year at Asheville? RandyA
Sling Posted February 7, 2010 #27 Posted February 7, 2010 We had a group come up from Ga. Peggy and I were riding 2up. We rode through Franklin,NC and got on hwy. 28 to ride to Fontana Village where we were going to stay, Hwy. 28 was 46 miles of a very twisty road. Peggy was really apprehensive about riding the Dragon. If hwy.28 was as bad as it was, there was no way she could do the dragon. Well we rode the Dragon and it was okay, and was a fun ride. Peggy did enjoyed it. We got the patches and pins for the Dragon, but Peggy wanted a patch that said " I survived Hwy.28"
Guest scarylarry Posted February 7, 2010 #28 Posted February 7, 2010 I have and wasn't a big thrill for me, watch out for the crotch rockets, the Cherahola is a very nice ride and I think you will like it.. After I rode it and came off thinking that it was all hype..
Sideoftheroad Posted February 7, 2010 #29 Posted February 7, 2010 Did it in '07 when I had my VTX. Gotta say I was disappointed. Planning on being back there in July as part of STAR Days. Will see if my experience will be any different.
Motorcycle Mike Posted February 7, 2010 #30 Posted February 7, 2010 (edited) Marion NC...North on highway 80 to BRP then south on 226A and north on 226 to BRP then south on 221 back to Marion, about 80 miles total. Thanks! I have rode that route, didnt know it had a name. We really like the Switzerland Inn. The have a great NY strip steak there. Edited February 7, 2010 by Motorcycle Mike
RandyR Posted February 7, 2010 #31 Posted February 7, 2010 Been there, done that a long time ago. To many crazies on MC's and too much truck traffic these days. There are better places to ride.
Brake Pad Posted February 7, 2010 #32 Posted February 7, 2010 Once 1 up, and once 2 up pullin the trailer. Come to think of it. I had a better time, with the wife screaming, bloody murder. P.S. the trailer will hop around the corners.. LOL....
Kirby Posted February 7, 2010 #34 Posted February 7, 2010 I guess when you grow up on these kind of roads it's just a road to get some where and to others it's a accomplishment to ride such a rode. I live and grew up on the triangle aka hwy 116 and drive or ride the dragon enough that's it's just part of life here. I guess it's one of those things you take for granted. I personally like the cherohala skyway and hwy 64 in Franklin NC scenery is better and no one trying to prove how fast they can get killed. If your into riding curves you can't leave out hwy 421 aka the snake in the Johnson City,TN area. My Yep, forgot about that one! very nice!
gbphotog Posted February 7, 2010 #35 Posted February 7, 2010 Many years ago when I drove sports cars. Z and Supra. Didn't even know it had a name back then other than the highway number. There are many great roads in that area that are just as good or better. Was back up there and did it 2up week before Thanksgiving. Spent two days touring the area.
Kirby Posted February 7, 2010 #36 Posted February 7, 2010 Another great road in that area is Wayah Road just west of Franklin over to US19 near Topton. Not many crotch rockets on it. Just a nice road to cruise along at about 45mph on.
Skid Posted February 7, 2010 #37 Posted February 7, 2010 Skid, did you make the Rooster Tail last year at Asheville? RandyA No I didn't get to make Asheville in 2009, We all was in TN.....
BradT Posted February 8, 2010 #38 Posted February 8, 2010 I personally like the cherohala skyway I liked this one better than the Dragon. Prefer the long sweeping curves over the tight corners. Brad
ctraylor Posted February 8, 2010 #39 Posted February 8, 2010 I rode it last August but was pulling a trailer and had to take it easy. It was an awesome ride anyway.
Guest Swifty Posted February 8, 2010 #40 Posted February 8, 2010 Yep, we did...or should I say Marilyn rode it and I duck walked it from one end to the other and back again. :rotfl:
BMW Posted February 8, 2010 #41 Posted February 8, 2010 Rode it a few times. Early morning mid week is the best time, you have it almost all to yourself.
CMIKE Posted February 8, 2010 #42 Posted February 8, 2010 Yup, been there, done that and bought the tee shirt and dragon stickers to prove it. Same here..but my boy wants to ride it...so maybe...just maybe this spring...I may take him up there so he can.
mrc Posted February 8, 2010 #43 Posted February 8, 2010 We rode it last year, with my wife and son. We did it a few times and had a great time.
vic venture Posted February 8, 2010 #44 Posted February 8, 2010 Rode it once on a star 1100 classic and again on a HD XR1200. Ride was ok but the most fun was talking with the other riders at Deals gap and a couple of scenic outlooks. Ate a great burger at Deals Gap. There are so many other great riding roads through the smokies that are a lot more relaxing but the dragon and its screaming demons are great for a few moments of pucker.
Two Tone White Posted February 8, 2010 #45 Posted February 8, 2010 8 times already... not interested anymore..always looking for virgin territory .. Then go try US 191 on the Eastern edge of AZ, along the NM border. It used to be called US 666. They still call it the Devil's Highway. Trust me, you won't forget the ride from (and through) one of the largest copper mines on the planet in Clifton/Morenci up to Alpine. I've ridden them both, and while you might want to check of the box that says "I rode the Dragon" on your personal "to-do list" - it pales in comparison to many of the roads out West. http://www.azride.com/DevilsHighwayRun.html
ediddy Posted February 8, 2010 #46 Posted February 8, 2010 I have ridden it twice. Won't do it again. I like the Cherohala Skyway much better.
1BigDog Posted February 8, 2010 #47 Posted February 8, 2010 Many times. In my opinion, The Devil's Triangle is better! It's located about 20 miles NW of Knoxville, TN. Not for the faint of heart. I did 116 once. 2 up. Scared the hell out of me at first. Two days later Me, Ozzie and the wives did the Cherhola then down and up the Dragon. Im not really a twisties type of rider. I do prefer a nice flowing road with scenery. A smooth interstate works just as well for me too. Still love A1A here in Florida!
Chaharly Posted February 8, 2010 #50 Posted February 8, 2010 Mom and dad did, they said it was no big deal really it was pretty, but it wasn't THAT challenging:thumbdown:
