frankc Posted February 1, 2010 #1 Posted February 1, 2010 Good afternoon everyone, I am about to change the set of tires for the first time on my 2008 Venture. I have read so much on which tire to choose, i really need some advice. The local bike shop tells me the Michilen Commander tires are a big seller for him and his customers love them. Most of his customers are Harley owners. He is giving me a good price on them but I just dont know how they will handle on my Venture. He sells other brand names and has no problem selling me what I ask for. I know alot of you have experience in this area and have used many different tires. My question is: How do the Michilen tires perform on a Venture and what could I expect out of them in mileage and performance? Thanks for your advice!
BuddyRich Posted February 1, 2010 #3 Posted February 1, 2010 I had the Commanders. Took them off before they were half worn. They are a noisy tire in the turns. Went back to the Avons. Best tire for the 2nd gens as far as I'm concerned
eusa1 Posted February 1, 2010 #4 Posted February 1, 2010 i put 20-25k per year on my venture, and have had all the major brands, i run michelin commanders and have no plans to go back to any others. they last longer for me than any others that i have run, and hold the road in rain and stick in the curves better. your sure to open a can of worms with this question. mike
1BigDog Posted February 1, 2010 #5 Posted February 1, 2010 My preference is Avons but I have heard that the Michelins are pretty good too. Stay away from the Metzeler 880's though unless you like rubber falling off of them.
SilvrT Posted February 1, 2010 #6 Posted February 1, 2010 your sure to open a can of worms with this question. mike how's this for worms... I'm installing a Bridgestone Spitfire S11 130/90 on the front tomorrow and once the stock rear Dunlop is worn out, and depending on how well the front does, I'll be getting a 170/80-15 Spitfire S11 for the rear. Can't comment on performance of them at this time but I eventually will.
Guest Boomerbiker Posted February 1, 2010 #7 Posted February 1, 2010 I replaced the front Avon tire last fall after 22,000 miles. Many of us run the smaller front tire - 130/90. Bill
Squidley Posted February 1, 2010 #8 Posted February 1, 2010 Frank, You'll get a lot of different responces here, I have run all the major brands besides the Dunlop E3's (but have heard great things about them) The Michelin Commander is a good tire, I used them on one of my '99's and then again on an '86. The ones on my G2 worked well for me and lasted a decent amount of time. I have also run the Avon Venom X's on several of my Ventures and love them, they are great in the curves and lasted a decent amount of miles. The Metzler 880's are an accident waiting to happen, MANY of our members here have had the tire come apart on them, I know 4 people here personally that I ride with had this happen. I would absolutely stay away from them. If you can get a good price on the Michelins, go for it.

I had the Spitfire II tires on my Virago. Last fall the back one was worn out, I put 30,000 klm on it and the PO put an unknown amount on it. The new rear tire is a Dunlop E3 which seems to work better on wet tar snakes than the Spitfire. Got a new E3 for the front too but haven't been able to pick it up yet. Sure can't fault the mileage on the Spitfire II.
Gamecock Posted February 2, 2010 #10 Posted February 2, 2010 Got my Avon's in the closet at home. I can't wait to get them put on! +1 for the Avon's Ben
