Every so often while browsing around on this site, the following pops up... anyone have any ideas??... anyone else getting it??

I did a search on this site for 'Banner' and numerous threads popped up.

But the one below looked interesting.

I have no idea if it is connected to your question though, just a possibility.

Most likely Malware. I would run a good sweep of the system with Antivirus and malware programs to see if you can root out the culprit. There is nothing within the Windows OS that will create this. This is an attempt to get you to start its "program" and infect you further.

****************************NOTICE IT IS FROM IMAGEHACK.INFO.******** look closely at the "alert" of course it says its a PDF document but who knows whats behind that button.

i get it randomley......its a safety setting........basically its asking you do you want to view or down load so you can scan it...............mine comes up only when Im trying to open a video or some pics.

BAsically what it boils down to is do you trust the person posting this video etc not to give you a virus.

Hey Rick

One of those fancy emoticons youve downloaded is probably causing the issues. Or something similar to that. It doesnt set off any errors for me but I had an issue a while back on another site that dumped innocuous emoticons into my sysmtem causing erros to come up.

I cleared mine up by updating the A/V software and not downloading any more cool looking icons.

Heres what safe google has to say about it

"fancy emoticons"... haha not this old boy! been around computers much too long for that. And I already done the google thing you posted.

What is curious to me is that it only appears while I'm on this site and it happens both here at work as well as at home. I'll be watching for any variance of this ... been doing it for a couple days now and it's quite random and happens only a couple times or so during a day and sometimes not every day.

As for "clicking on it"... like I said... been around computers much too long to get caught by that old trick.

Why? Wouldn't that reduce your theoretical security?

By the way, there have been reports of attacks based upon a Java problem in .pdf files. It would appear this problem has been evolving since '07. This is as of last July. As of last December.

Of course that doesn't mean the file in question is part of the problem. But...

FWIW I've been getting the attached warning for quite a while. I just say no and move on.

It just wont ask to load or save. (the box) coming up all the time for him. I agree that it is trying to load something from (THIS) site. almost like what happen to the other site. but not as bad. he also might have his security settings up WAY to high as well. dunno. another thing is that we all would be having this problem. If it is that bad his sytem has already been compromised. I agree he needs to be running a systems check asap and it probably is Malware.

What's the point of Microsoft FINALLY adding some security to Exploder if everyone turns it off? Seems to me if one has an OS with major known problems, like Windows, one should be more alert to problems, not less.

I don't know if he needs to do a systems check. I do know that I scanned my system recently and found fourteen potential viruses. All in emails sent to me by people running Windows. Of course, none of them run on my system so I just quarantined them with plans on finding them and dissecting them for the fun of it.

Hmmm...

What about browser toolbars, plug-ins, add-ons etc? Do you have any of those in common on your work machine and home machine?

I don't use any of the myriad of toolbars and add-ons ... if any get installed by "accident", I uninstall them.. hate all that crap LOL only have what comes with the browser ... no Google toolbar, no Yahoo toolbar, no nuffin.

Only plug-in's are what is absolutely necessary for general browsing.

Steve, are you getting that box that your showing as well from only from this site?
It's much more specific than that. I get it in every thread that Brake Pad posts in. I personally suspect that his Tin Star image is linked from his personal site, but that's just a guess.

I use Opera and would not dream of lowering the security level. Opera has had real security for years. Tabbed browsing too. It's also standards compliant, which tends to show me which web sites are Nephew Ware. Funny, a local college that brags about it's IT department has a web site with literally hundreds of coding errors. Opera has a menu option to Validate page code through the W3C. When I get a malformed page I usually validate it so I can snicker at the "professional" who wrote it. The State of Indiana's web sites are terrible. Roberts Camera? Literally thousands of errors.

Nope. Not turning down security. Long live the penguin.

I avoid cross platform plugins like the plague. That's one place where any system can suffer at least some compromise. While they can't affect my whole system they could cause problems in my home directory, and I don't need that. Too much of a hassle rebuilding it. Of course the whole thing's archived on an external drive, but why set myself up to need to?

It just wont ask to load or save. (the box) coming up all the time for him. .

In order to stop it from "always ask", you first have to un-check the box and then either Open it or Save it. choosing Cancel (which is what I do) will not save that setting and I am not about to Open or Save it. further, since it is a PDF file which I often download PDF files for other purposes, if I uncheck the box, the next time this particular file comes to me (the "banner.pdf"), it will either download or open, depending on what I chose for the last valid PDF. DON'T WANT THAT!

The reason a person leaves that checked is for situations such as this so that when something suspiscious tries to come in, you CAN CANCEL IT.
