Cougar Posted January 28, 2010 #1 Posted January 28, 2010 I know that the factory toque's the ignition bolts down and brakes them off at the factory if my thinking is correct. So my Question is how are some of you removing them. The only reason I want to do this and remove them and place a regaler bolts on there place is I have a spare and if one day I was stranded I could just replace it on the road and be on my way. any idea's or tricks that you folks have done to remove them? Is it a hard job? I guess worse case is I could pull tank back a bit and un-plug bad iggy and plug now on in leave it lay there .. under the tank. all I am doing is thinking ahead a little for long road trips. even have my spare fuel pump as well. Thanks! Jeff
1BigDog Posted January 28, 2010 #2 Posted January 28, 2010 I used a dremel to cut slots in the round heads then used an impact driver to remove the bolts. Note: they are loctited in place so dont be afraid to whack that impact driver hard. You can get replacement bolts from any hardware store. The bolts that hold the handlebar risers on are the correct size and length.
eusa1 Posted January 28, 2010 #3 Posted January 28, 2010 drill a small hole into the center of the screw and put an easy bit out into the hole. that what i did on 3 bikes. mike. do you have a spare ignition switch?

Not doubting you on the EZ out but I tried it and all I did was snap off the bit in the hole. The loctite had a death grip on my bolts.
Ponch Posted January 28, 2010 #5 Posted January 28, 2010 Not doubting you on the EZ out but I tried it and all I did was snap off the bit in the hole. The loctite had a death grip on my bolts. I tried the ez out. It worked on one side, but rounded out on the other. I drilled the head off with a larger bit and still had to take the dremel to it.
Cougar Posted January 28, 2010 Author #6 Posted January 28, 2010 How long is that bolt on each side guys? Mike , yes I have a spare spare ignition switch now. and what did you guys replace them with? what MM size? And another Question, why are you guys taking those bolts out as well? same idea?
eusa1 Posted January 28, 2010 #7 Posted January 28, 2010 jeff, you may want to split the new ignition switch in advance of any failure, so that you can key it to match. its very easy, the screws are also anti theft style.
Cougar Posted January 28, 2010 Author #8 Posted January 28, 2010 Mike, I will just bring it to your house this summer and you fix it. I buy food! In the mean time I just want to be able to remove the bolts in there now and make it so I can easily remove and replace. I have a 2 keys already for the spare ignition switch.
eusa1 Posted January 28, 2010 #9 Posted January 28, 2010 free food??? don't bother with it jeff!! i'm all over it! :178:you said the magic words!
Cougar Posted January 28, 2010 Author #10 Posted January 28, 2010 OK, Now that the FREE FOOD is taken care of for making the switch match later what size or type of bolts do I need to pick up? also should they be an Allen type head I guess ?
eusa1 Posted January 28, 2010 #11 Posted January 28, 2010 jeff, i did use the allen heads for the switch mounting, but only had the standard flat blade screws for the tumbler cover, it really don't matter as they are all under the black cover when your done. i will have to go out and pull one out to get you the size info, maybe in the morning? mike
