Aimhigh Posted January 26, 2010 #1 Posted January 26, 2010 Almost 80 degrees today...wanted to take the bike for a spin. It wasn't handling properly...thought perhaps tire pressure. Sure enough it was low...while adding air realized that the valve stem was rotted and broken. The bike is only two and 1/2 yrs old...this surprises me. Anyway, I need to get it repaired...I am not much of a mechanic and I am wondering how difficult it is to remove the front wheel. Appreciate any advice.
Kregerdoodle Posted January 26, 2010 #2 Posted January 26, 2010 Not a problem, just jack it up, remove front fender, remove brakes, remove front wheel, pay atten. as to what spacer goes on what side, they look the same to me, but was told to watch that..Good luck, really not hard to do, if you have a lift.
SilvrT Posted January 26, 2010 #3 Posted January 26, 2010 Piece of cake... undo and remove the brake calipers (the mounting bolts, not the "slider" bolts) hang them off to the side a bit undo the axle and slide it out, holding the wheel as you do drop the wheel oh yeah.... jack the scoot up first LOL

Piece of cake... undo and remove the brake calipers (the mounting bolts, not the "slider" bolts) hang them off to the side a bit undo the pinch bolt underneath the right fork undo the axle and slide it out, holding the wheel as you do drop the wheel oh yeah.... jack the scoot up first LOL

I would expect the Valve Stem NOT to dry rot prior to tire needing replacement due to tread-wear. Next question is how good your dealer is? Let us know??
flb_78 Posted January 27, 2010 #12 Posted January 27, 2010 I doubt a 2.5 year old valve stem is going to covered under warranty. When you have it changed out, have them install metal valve stems. Much more durable then rubber ones.

Special thanks to Mike (eusa1) for the phone call and advice. A couple of you asked about taking it to the dealer. I have a great dealer, that would probably do the repair without any problem...only thing is my dealer is 90 miles away...so I will just take care of this one. You all are super!
MikeWa Posted January 27, 2010 #14 Posted January 27, 2010 I read somewheres there was a bad batch of valve stems from china. Recall except there is no way to find out which vehicles they are on. No way to trace them, no serial numbers etc. The dealer should replace them for you. I have replaced valve stems without removing the wheel or tire. Jack the bike up. Mark the tire - rim location. Let the air out of the tire and collapse bead. Use a stem puller to remove the old stem. While holding the bead collapsed pull the new stem in with the puller. Re inflate the tire while making sure your marks are aligned. Mike
