Dave77459 Posted January 25, 2010 #1 Posted January 25, 2010 Saturday we removed the tank badge from Roxie, my '06 RTSD. I like how sleek it made her look. Someone said she looks like a panther. Mysterious, menacing, and sexy, that's her. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4302465766_151b3e912f.jpg The most glaring thing to change now is the hinges. I know I can buy OEM chrome inserts, but I have restrained myself from adding flashy stuff. She is a midnight bike, and IMO is meant to be dark and threatening. Chrome there would be out of character. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4304221436_505d4eecf9.jpg What are some options for replacing the hinge inserts with gloss black. Or better, like the original but saying Roxie instead of Tour Deluxe? Ideas? Dave

Tom
BuddyRich Posted January 25, 2010 #3 Posted January 25, 2010 Cut yourself a piece of thin black Plexiglas and put it in there.
Dave77459 Posted January 25, 2010 Author #4 Posted January 25, 2010 Dave , a few years back Freebird had some made up that was custom made for whoever....PM him where he had it done. Tom I saw that, but it was laser etched chrome/shinystuff. Cut yourself a piece of thin black Plexiglas and put it in there. Is this something can be done with hand tools? Maybe I should be on the lookout for a fabricator. Dave
BuddyRich Posted January 25, 2010 #5 Posted January 25, 2010 I'll see if I can make something up. You would have to silcone it in probably. Be about 20 bucks if your interested.
eusa1 Posted January 25, 2010 #6 Posted January 25, 2010 there are several things that you can do with the center of the hinges.. 32 led lights inside each hinge, make for good brake and running lamps on my homemade trailer
Black Owl Posted January 25, 2010 #7 Posted January 25, 2010 and of course the ever reliable Duck (sic) Tape....

I am tentatively interested. Do you think I could etch some words into it? there are several things that you can do with the center of the hinges.. 32 led lights inside each hinge, make for good brake and running lamps on my homemade trailer That's a cool trailer! and of course the ever reliable Duck (sic) Tape.... Why didn't I think of that?! Dave
naturbar Posted January 25, 2010 #9 Posted January 25, 2010 dave 77459 did you heat the emblems to remove them - what was your process? i like the looks of it w/o the emblems. i've got an '07 midnight - could be my next project---hmmmmm!
Dave77459 Posted January 25, 2010 Author #10 Posted January 25, 2010 dave 77459 did you heat the emblems to remove them - what was your process? i like the looks of it w/o the emblems. i've got an '07 midnight - could be my next project---hmmmmm! OWEN started with his fingernails... http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/4304925300_3615231584.jpg That was working, but slowly. So we used corded 50# fishing line. I wore gloves and sawed at the glue while OWEN pulled it away. That left the glue.... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2716/4304180919_f7b3a7a480.jpg Then we used toxins, a plastic scraper, and shop towels to remove the glue. OWEN and Gunboat worked with me for a long time. Goo Gone Extreme seemed to work. But then Gunboat uncovered a can of... lacquer thinner, I think. (That's what the can says when you blow up the photo, and what I remember.) It worked much much faster! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4304258233_dbb384d82a.jpg The result was a nice, black, shiny blank canvas to enjoy. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4304181099_5a08d902e5.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2755/4301719153_07fa14cb90.jpg
LilBeaver Posted January 25, 2010 #11 Posted January 25, 2010 If you really did you Lacquer thinner on it, make sure you keep that puppy waxed... A little dab here and there, wiped off almost immediately is not enough to do any major damage right away but if it was being rubbed in to get the glue off there is a good chance that some damage to the clear coat occurred. A healthy coat of wax once every couple of months ought to take care of it though, no big deal. Looks great!!

But thanks for the reminder. I put a coat of wax on it when I got home. I ought to put another coat on it tomorrow too. Dave
naturbar Posted January 29, 2010 #13 Posted January 29, 2010 Dave 77459, thanks for the input & photos ! awesome lokking bike !!
Ponch Posted January 29, 2010 #14 Posted January 29, 2010 there are several things that you can do with the center of the hinges.. 32 led lights inside each hinge, make for good brake and running lamps on my homemade trailer I bet that LED install on the hinges would be popular if you wanted to make them for sale.

If it were mine I'd look for some place that does chrome and see if they can black chrome the hinges. Won't be as dark, but would look nice and custom.
Ponch Posted January 29, 2010 #16 Posted January 29, 2010 Dave, I'm going to the chrome shop next week. I can probably make something up for you.

Kregerdoodle Posted January 29, 2010 #18 Posted January 29, 2010 It looks like Black Pearl.... it will look great, Ponch has some of the Gauge plates made out of it, you should check it out.. Kreg I feel ignorant. What is black chrome? Dave
Rockdoc Posted February 1, 2011 #19 Posted February 1, 2011 Just a thought, but what did you do with the inserts you took off?

Pegasus1300 Posted February 1, 2011 #21 Posted February 1, 2011 Or take them to a powder coater and have them done in gloss black,or make template and cut a piece out of thin sheet metal to glue in there.3M trim adheseve should work.
Dave77459 Posted February 1, 2011 Author #22 Posted February 1, 2011 Just a thought, but what did you do with the inserts you took off? I see that you are looking for some, but mine say "Tour Deluxe". I don't suppose you are interested. Dave
friesman Posted February 1, 2011 #23 Posted February 1, 2011 Quite a few guys around here have gone to the Black Chrome look, i like it! It will work on your hinges. it cant be used on anything hotter than 400f. so your pipes are outta the question... Brian
Rockdoc Posted February 1, 2011 #24 Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks Dave You're right they may not look right on an early 2nd gen. I was thinking more of using them as a guide to getting some made here in the UK, although to be honest they have got to look better than the hole thats there at the moment. I just thought they were a transfer, but by the look of your excellent photos they seem to be a plastic insert. Did you have a price in mind? Cheers Alasdair

Cheers Alasdair I haven't taken mine off yet, since I didn't have a replacement in hand. And now, Roxie is in the shop for perhaps 8 weeks. I don't know that you will want to wait, but if so, I'd send them in exchange for a postcard. If you are only using the shape as a template, I could also trace them once off and send you that. Dave
