starkruzen Posted January 24, 2010 #1 Posted January 24, 2010 I called my local Yamaha Service Manager about getting my 07 RSTD in for a 12,000 mile tune-up and I was SHOCKED! HE asked me if I changed my own oil...and I hesatated and told him that I do. He asked me if it runs okay..I said yes. He told me to clean my air filter and save myself about $800! I then asked him about the carb sync and new plugs...He said the RSTD rarely gets out of sync and the plugs would probably out last the bike! After I got myself off the floor..I said thanks and hung up. These bikes are very tough machines. I did get a set of new plugs (NKG Iridium IX) and took out one my plugs from the bike and it looks perfect. Maybe later. Mark:240:
SilvrT Posted January 24, 2010 #2 Posted January 24, 2010 I've just replaced my plugs with the Iridium ones. I have about the same mileage as you and the original plugs were still in good condition. Other things you should do at this stage (besides changing oil and filter)... Remove the rear wheel and grease those splines real good. Remove the 5-pin "damper" and clean it up and lube it real good (there's a circlip that holds it in). Swap the inner and outer rear brake pads. Pull the pumpkin and lube the splines on the driveshaft (both ends). Lube all pivot points on the rear shock. Check steering head bearing load (adjustment). Check the carb sync if you have the tool. There are writeups on all of the above somewhere on the site.
skydoc_17 Posted January 24, 2010 #3 Posted January 24, 2010 Hey Mark, First off, I wanted to say you are very lucky that you have such an honest Dealer, Most are not. With all of the money you just saved by NOT having your 12,000 mile service done, purchase a Manometer (CarbTune) so you can do your own Carb. Sync's. and heck you could even spring for a nice Motorcycle Jack and get that puppy off the floor when you work on it, AND STILL have $500.00 in the bank! SilverT had some great ideas for maint. you can do for yourself and will prolong the life of your scoot. (especially with that new jack!) Just my thoughts, Earl
