spear Posted October 3, 2007 #1 Posted October 3, 2007 I just renewed the insurance on my RSV. When I bought it (second-hand) the previous owner said it was a 2003 model. Took him on his word. I've since found out - through this forum - that it's a 2004 model. She's white, apparently that makes it 2004. The insurance company is trying to tell me that it can tell from the VIN that it was manufactured in 2003. This may be so, but does that make it a 2003 or 2004 model. See my avatar. She's definately white. VIN is JYAVP09254A000058 and was sold new in Australia on 04/05/2004. (That's the fourth day of May for you Yanks). So, what year model do you reckon I own? I'd like to straighten out the insurance company.

For example 2008 models are all ready in production. Your 5 year warranty will expire in May of 2008, 5 yrs from the PURCHASE date. Your insurance company should know this. It kind of a double edge sword in that if they think its older premiums should be lower. However, if they need to remimburse they will be trying to pay you for an older MODEL than you have. Unless things are drastically different on the bottom side:rasberry: you need to stick to your guns. They should also know from the VIN what MODEL yr it is. Hope this helps. Jay
spear Posted October 3, 2007 Author #3 Posted October 3, 2007 Thanks for that Jay. It's purely an academic matter for me. The insurance company can tell me whatever model it wants to, because I have it insured for an agreed value. And as for 5 years warranty - not in Oz mate! Two years is all you get here. I don't know why Stateside warranty should be longer than Down Under. Maybe somebody has an answer for that one as well. Bit discriminatory if you ask me.
dfitzbiz Posted October 3, 2007 #4 Posted October 3, 2007 The tenth number from the left is the model year code in the VIN. This is an auto/motorcycle industry standard. Yours is a "4", you have a 2004 model. Congrats and enjoy.

pegscraper Posted October 3, 2007 #6 Posted October 3, 2007 It is kind of a goofy situation. I don't know why Y can't stamp the correct model year on the bike. My '96 Royal Star has a tag on the neck stamped with "1995". There is no model year of 1995 for the Royal Star. The model was first introduced in 1996.

Your 5 year warranty will expire in May of 2008, 5 yrs from the PURCHASE date. I have the same bike and it is a 2004 however I would like to correct the warranty stated above. The bike went in service May 2004 so the warranty is good till May 2009 not 2008 (5 years from on road date) I purchased mine Aug 28 2004 and the warranty runs to Aug 28 2009. Love the colour.Enjoy the bike. John P.S. Sorry about the two year warranty. I just read the post you placed at 6:44. The info I have here would be true if you had the bike here.
spear Posted October 4, 2007 Author #8 Posted October 4, 2007 Thanks John. I'm now thoroughly convinced that I have the 2004. And you're right - the pearl/white is an extraordinary colour. B!tch to keep clean though. I was on a day ride with my pillion-in-a-million the other day, and saw this little cloud of black spots looming up at a great rate of knots. Then suddenly - SPLAT! I think it was a swarm of bees. Guts all over the screen and farings. Happened just like that. Washed off pretty easy though. Always get a smile from people at service stations when I pull up for fuel AND wash my winsdcreen. These bikes are far and few between in Oz, and 9 people out of 10 think it's a H-D. They're very quickly enlightened on the differences between a motorcycle and a H-D.

Every manufacturer, whether it be car, pickup, motorcycle, atv, semi's, does it. That's why right now, in 2007, you can go buy a 2008 vehicle. I forget the month that they switch the year but I think it's around June.
