So Far So Good...

Well last night I decided I wanted an electric fireplace. I don't have a heating system anymore here and it's been getting rough with the little electric ones I have at night. So I bought it and I'd have to pick it up in Suffolk at the Lowes. That was the closest one that still had any. So I leave after chatting with the muffinman and head up. Get the thing in the truck (took 3 guys to pick it up and put it in). Now I'm thinking wow I'm alone how am I gonna get this thing out of the truck. Being constructive I figured I get to that when I got home. So I get home pull the truck up to the porch and shove the box out of the bed onto the porch. So far so good. Now how do I get it in the house? Well I tried a few things and realized I wasn't getting the box in the house. I had even thought of hooking the dog up to it. Only problem would be getting it up off the porch into the door. Also the box was looking a bit wide to go through the door. So I decided go ahead and open the thing outside and get the parts in. Have you ever seen those industrial staples they use on these boxes. There's a line two each all the way across. Finally I get it open sort of then I got all this tape to get through. Once it's open it's way easier to get the parts out. There a bit heavy but way lighter then together in that box. Oh yeah the weight was about 104 I weigh just a little more then that. So now I got all these parts in the house to put together. I'll let you know how that goes. I'm thinking it's gotta be easier then getting it in the house was. Oh the fireplace is pretty big too. It's 42" high, 48.3" wide, and 14.5" deep. Now I gotta figure out where to put this thing. Guess I'll worry about that after I get it together.

Not sure what's wrong with the old heater it hasn't worked since last year. Jeff worked on it, but couldn't replace anymore parts so I said to heck with it. We never get cold weather for too long around here. Ha ha. I'm fine I now have to find the stupid wing bolts it's suppose to have to put it together. I think I'll take 5 and get a hot something to drink. This might take longer then I thought. I guess I'll have to climb in the back of the truck to see if they were stuck in any of the styrofoam that was in all of it. I got little pieces of styrofoam all over the house the yard and me.

You might wanna put it where you want it before you put it together, otherwise you'll be in the same boat when you try to move it.

Also, is it 110V or 220? That will be very important when it comes time to plug it up or wire it up.

It's 110. I plugged in the firebox to make sure it's ok. Seems to be working ok. The rest of it is for show. Pretty nice wood though and heavy. I still can't find the wing bolts so I guess I'll call the company and let them no I didn't get them. Maybe they'll be nice and let me pick some up at the local Lowes and not go back to Suffolk for some.

I know it's a little late for this suggestion, but you might consider it for the next time you need to move something heavy. Get you a funiture dolly and an appliance dolly. The funiture dolly is a square base with 4 rollers on it and you place the object on it and you can push it anywhere you want. The appliance dolly is basically a 2 wheeler with an adjustable strap on it to tie down a larger object to it and you just tilt it over a little and go. Just don't try to move things that are too heavy, ask the guys that are near to you to come and help. We are kinda fond of havin you around.

I tried using the dolly we have but it was laying flat so it was bigger then the dolly. I can be a bit stubborn too. I'll figure out a way to do what I have to, if not then I'll ask. I hope not to be buying anything else big till the muffinman gets home. Then he can do it.

Try to find an outlet thats not on a loaded up circuit, or Stud Muffin'll have to come over and rescue you again! It's probably a 1500 watt heater in there which will pull about 12.5 amps, that's a pretty good load for a circuit. Also, DO NOT use an extension cord, it will heat up and melt!

 

I like the idea of a nice hot drink with additives and just watch yur pretty little logs for tonite and worry about the rest of it tomorrow!

Good job Margaret, we're all SO proud of you! However, being in an outlet with nothing else plugged in doesn't mean much unless it's on a dedicated circuit. Occasionally I would check where it's plugged in and make sure it's not getting hot. If you feel some warmth at the plug, that means it's gonna get hot and hurt something. If the unit has two heat levels, try using the lower level and recheck the plug after awhile. You may also want to feel your circuit breakers to make sure one of them is not getting hot.

 

Do these checks cause we wanna keep our Mini around for a long time!

It actually sounds like the type unit my son got last year at Lowe's. His has the dark wood mantle and storage doors on each side. It actually puts out a good amount of heat and uses little power to operate. I think you'll like it once you get it situated where it puts the heat where it does the best in heating the area you want.

I didn't get the really fancy one like that but it's pretty nice. It's a dimplex most of the research I did said they were the best heat source for the money and are good on the electric bill. They have a bunch that are really fancy. Plus the flame is supposed to be the most realistic. Seems to be working pretty good. I'll check the cord and the breakers too Dan. I understand I'm very entertaining so I guess I need to stick around.

Just keep a good eye on it for a while Mini. Just feel plug as someone said and make sure it is not getting too warm. I'm looking for a gas log to put in my fireplace now. Built fire in it one time and Warden said "I'm not having all that dust in "MY" house... Gas log would be nice on nights like this.
