This here is the finest ship in the Navy. You are now looking at the USS Benfold DDG 65. I too am a proud Plank Owner of this fine ship and all though the Military life was not for me I don't regret a bit the time that I served.. Thank You to all who have and are still serving.

I had the honor and pleasure to serve aboard two fine Navy ships; I was Plankowner of the re-commissioned battleships USS Iowa (BB-61) and USS Missouri (BB-63). I'm at work now, I'll have to find some photos to add later on. Obviously a lot of history on both those battlewagons, particularly the Mighty Mo. For me personally, I shared a special connection with my dad. He was aboard the British battleship HMS King George V in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrender was signed aboard the Missouri.

My last ship was the USS Ogden (LDP-5) in the amphibious navy. Not nearly the show boat that the battleships were, but not bad duty either. I worked on the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System as a Fire Control Man, working up to FC1. Good times.

You lucky dog! The IOWA and MISSOURI?!?!? I am jealous! In my opnion, that class of ship is the finest to EVER sail the ocean's! The Nimitz class is close behind, but NOTHING compares to a BB!

Like Steve, I was on the USS Proteus, AS-19. I arrived New Year's Day 1969 and was ships company one day then transferred to Submarine Squadron Fifteen (on-board) on the second day. Stayed there 27 months then to Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk for the remainder of my hitch. I am color blind so left the Navy as a YN2.

Didn't know you could get to the Pacific from the mighty Grand River? :rotf::Laugh::rotf:

They were building the Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) right next to mine, in Bath, Maine. How many of those are they planning on building, or are they done?

I believe they just started #61, and have ordered at least 5 more. This is a great warship, and nothing anyone else has rivals its capabilities.

It looks like several of us were Fire Controlmen.:happy34:

Tomahawk and Harpoon here.

Well, I'm glad I wasn't makin them things for nuttin. I spent the late 70's and early 80's working at Texas Instruments troubleshootin them. We made the seekers for Harpoons,Tomohawk's and Harm's right there in Richardson Texas.

Now the ships I was on when I was in were a little different than your's, not as big but a whole lot faster

I am sooo jealous of you folks for being in the Military!

I tried to get into the Nave twice in '79 & '80. I couldn't pass the physical.

I have had many friends & relatives either in the Military or have served, and I always LOVE to hear their stories. I always let them know how jealous I have always been.

As I'm sure you have heard before, thanks for serving!

My tin can was a Knox class Frigate FF1082 USS Elmer Montgomery. I spent 9 month on her during the 1st Gulf War in The Med, Red Sea, Suez Canal, Indian ocean and the Persian Gulf. I was brown shoe Navy as I was a Helicopter Mechanic with the air detachment stationed on her from HSL 36. Anti Submarine Warfare was our game....not too many subs in the Gulf though

:confused24:

I loved my time in, I was very alive back then, I wouldn't have changed my life one bit with everything I know now....the best years of my life so far :)

ARLEIGH BURKE is DDG-51, that was the first in class, they are now at DDG-113. In my time on the ship, I had to know all the classifications and could just about tell you the name by the number on the hull.

Wasn't in the Navy. I was in the Air Force, but we worked with a number of different ships to provide assistance. Here is a picture of our Flr-9 that allowed us to provide occasional assistance.

Homeport Subic Bay Philippines. The only US Navy ship to shoot down a MiG with a Standard missile.

Who plotted that shot? Daniel Boone?
