talonsx2 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 This here is the finest ship in the Navy. You are now looking at the USS Benfold DDG 65. I too am a proud Plank Owner of this fine ship and all though the Military life was not for me I don't regret a bit the time that I served.. Thank You to all who have and are still serving. DC3 (SW) Witham Plank Owner (Departing) http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/05016517.jpg
Gamecock Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I had the honor and pleasure to serve aboard two fine Navy ships; I was Plankowner of the re-commissioned battleships USS Iowa (BB-61) and USS Missouri (BB-63). I'm at work now, I'll have to find some photos to add later on. Obviously a lot of history on both those battlewagons, particularly the Mighty Mo. For me personally, I shared a special connection with my dad. He was aboard the British battleship HMS King George V in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrender was signed aboard the Missouri. My last ship was the USS Ogden (LDP-5) in the amphibious navy. Not nearly the show boat that the battleships were, but not bad duty either. I worked on the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System as a Fire Control Man, working up to FC1. Good times. You lucky dog! The IOWA and MISSOURI?!?!? I am jealous! In my opnion, that class of ship is the finest to EVER sail the ocean's! The Nimitz class is close behind, but NOTHING compares to a BB! Ben
SteveW Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 USS Proteus AS-19 Sub Tender stationed on Guam 1967. I was hospital Corpsman on board before my tour in Nam in 1968.
juggler Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) I spent most of my 8 years (1986-1994) in the Naval Reserves as a Hospital Corpsman doing Biomedical Electronics. However, I did get out on ship twice. Once on the USS George Philips FFG12 and once on the USS Estocin FFG15. http://www.navsource.org/archives/07/images/12/071201.jpg http://www.navsource.org/archives/07/images/12/071206.jpg Edited January 11, 2010 by juggler
stewart1944 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Like Steve, I was on the USS Proteus, AS-19. I arrived New Year's Day 1969 and was ships company one day then transferred to Submarine Squadron Fifteen (on-board) on the second day. Stayed there 27 months then to Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk for the remainder of my hitch. I am color blind so left the Navy as a YN2.
thecount Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 ...my son at the helm of the last ship I owned, showing rooster tail at 1/4 throttle, heading out the Juan de Fuca for the Pacific Ocean... Didn't know you could get to the Pacific from the mighty Grand River?

How many of those are they planning on building, or are they done?
Gamecock Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 They were building the Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) right next to mine, in Bath, Maine. How many of those are they planning on building, or are they done? I believe they just started #61, and have ordered at least 5 more. This is a great warship, and nothing anyone else has rivals its capabilities. Ben

BuddyRich Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 It looks like several of us were Fire Controlmen. Tomahawk and Harpoon here. Well, I'm glad I wasn't makin them things for nuttin. I spent the late 70's and early 80's working at Texas Instruments troubleshootin them. We made the seekers for Harpoons,Tomohawk's and Harm's right there in Richardson Texas. Now the ships I was on when I was in were a little different than your's, not as big but a whole lot faster http://www.ausairpower.net/000-Buff-M117.jpg http://bobfelts.com/Portals/0/Gallery/Album/2/KC-135%20and%20FB-111%20refueling.jpg
craigatcsi Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I am sooo jealous of you folks for being in the Military! I tried to get into the Nave twice in '79 & '80. I couldn't pass the physical. I have had many friends & relatives either in the Military or have served, and I always LOVE to hear their stories. I always let them know how jealous I have always been. As I'm sure you have heard before, thanks for serving! craigr

Squidley Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 My tin can was a Knox class Frigate FF1082 USS Elmer Montgomery. I spent 9 month on her during the 1st Gulf War in The Med, Red Sea, Suez Canal, Indian ocean and the Persian Gulf. I was brown shoe Navy as I was a Helicopter Mechanic with the air detachment stationed on her from HSL 36. Anti Submarine Warfare was our game....not too many subs in the Gulf though I loved my time in, I was very alive back then, I wouldn't have changed my life one bit with everything I know now....the best years of my life so far

ARLEIGH BURKE is DDG-51, that was the first in class, they are now at DDG-113. In my time on the ship, I had to know all the classifications and could just about tell you the name by the number on the hull. Ben
jvbailey3 Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Wasn't in the Navy. I was in the Air Force, but we worked with a number of different ships to provide assistance. Here is a picture of our Flr-9 that allowed us to provide occasional assistance. http://www.secret-bases.co.uk/IMG/chicksands-CDAA.jpg If you know what it is - wohoo. If not, it is just a big antenna and we can leave it at that.
