RossKean Posted January 8, 2010 #1 Posted January 8, 2010 I seem to have lost a couple of bolts that secure the trunk support to the (side of the) fender. Rather than remove the other existing bolts to check, I am wondering if anyone knows off-hand what the correct size might be. The Yamaha parts fiche just refers to them as "bolts" without dimensions. (SKU 92014-08020-00, button head bolt) Suspect it may be a M6 x 1.00, maybe 16mm, but I'm not sure. Thanks Ross

Thanks Ross Not exactly sure of size, I think that's right, but I had the same problem even with locktight on mine one side kept coming loose. I found the cheapest way to get any bolts was at our local farm store. They had chrome, button head, perfect matches for a realtive small $$. I bought an assortment to have on hand, maybe 5 or 6 and only cost me about $10 or less.
cb1313 Posted January 8, 2010 #3 Posted January 8, 2010 My local Lowe's and Home Depot sell metric nuts and bolts. I take a sample bolt and check. If I purchase the wrong ones I save them to see if I can use them else where. The hardware holding on the front fender chrome trim fell off so I went to L/H-D and found some nice small bolts with chrome cap nuts. I just put the bolts in backwards with the caps on the outside using BLUE locktight. I also replaced the rear axle shaft tightening bolts with a longer bolt and self-locking not. Cb
jeff2053 Posted January 8, 2010 #4 Posted January 8, 2010 Ross You could always buy the replacements from Rick Bulter he has his set up so you don't need any tools for removall of your truink and side bags and if that doesn't interest you I would bet he can tell you what size you need. He has an add in the classified section Good Luck Jeff
RossKean Posted January 8, 2010 Author #5 Posted January 8, 2010 I have a number of places where I can get metric hardware; just trying to confirm the bolt size so I can stop on the way home from work today.
Eck Posted January 8, 2010 #6 Posted January 8, 2010 FYI.... Ace Hardware also sells chrome hardware...The usually carry a good selection too.

Doesn't give pitch size though. Many people are not aware of the relationship between Yamaha part numbers and sizes of some fasteners. Knowing that this relationship exists can sometimes save you a tremendous amount of time and hopefully prevent you from ordering something you don't really need when replacing or upgrading fasteners. 91314-08020-00. If you look carefully at the center set of digits, (-08020-), they are not likely to do a thing for you unless you happen to know in advance that this bolt is 08mm in diameter and 20mm long , "08020" is an 8x20mm bolt! The bolts that hold the end plate on the clutch are Yamaha Part no: 97017-06025-00, so this bolt is 6x25mm right ? The screws that hold the end caps on the carburetors are Yamaha part no: 98580-05012-00, so these screws are 5x12mm. This relationship is not accurate 100% of the time. There are some fasteners that have special qualities that will use the center digit alone or the entire string for other purposes. Keeping that in mind this information will hopefully make life somewhat easier the next time you are wondering "what size is that bolt?" Gary

Gary Great!! Looks like I need M8 (20 mm length). I would assume 1mm pitch. Very useful information! Thanks Ross
atlm Posted January 10, 2010 #9 Posted January 10, 2010 FYI, The 8mm bolts that attach the passing lights are 1.25 pitch, so the ones you're missing might be the same. My local Home Depot has a tiny, sad selection of metric hardware, so I decided to try Ace. Their hardware selection is incredible. As someone mentioned, they have chrome hardware, as well as stainless, allen head, specialty, and all lengths and sizes.
RossKean Posted January 11, 2010 Author #10 Posted January 11, 2010 A little research tells me that M8 bolts are commonly available with 1.25mm or 1.00 mm thread pitch. My local Yammie dealer didn't have any in stock but I think I can get some from a local industrial fastener supplier - as long as I can confirm the thread pitch. (no Ace hardware around here and the Home Depot is almost useless.) The dealer just has a part number, without specifications. I guess I'll just have to pull one of the remaining bolts and measure. The bike's been put to bed for the season so it will have to wait until Spring. (Stored in a warehouse with limited access) Ross
