BigBear Posted December 30, 2009 #1 Posted December 30, 2009 I'm in the market for a Travel Cover for my RSV and I'm giving serious thought to buying the Star travel cover (STR-4XYTR-CV-R1). If you have one, would you mind answering a couple of questions? 1) Are the soft (non-scratching) areas for the windshield and trunk areas? 2) Are there grommets at the bottom so that the cover can be secured? Thanks!
massey130 Posted December 30, 2009 #2 Posted December 30, 2009 i don't have the Star cover, but i do have a nice cover that meets the same specs. i got mine off ebay and paid right about 30 bux. the Star cover specs don't say it is safe for open trailering. If you plan on using it while trailering at highway speeds, i would be concerned about scratching and paint damage. even if my cover had stated safe for use while open trailering, i would not do so. this is just how i would do things. my cover has soft spots for contact areas and grommets.
Kirby Posted December 30, 2009 #3 Posted December 30, 2009 I just bought a Nelson-Rigg cover from Motorcyclesuperstore a couple of weeks ago and it has the characteristics you described plus lower panels that are heat resistant. It was one of their daily deals .Cost me $36.00 ,including shipping. So far, so good. I wanted one of the Star covers, but money's a little tight in my neck of the woods.
BigBear Posted December 30, 2009 Author #4 Posted December 30, 2009 Thanks for the info...but i got a gift card from the dealer where I bought the bike...so I'm kinda stuck buying a travel cover from "them". I'm leaning towards the Star cover to eat up the gift card....heck...I don't like buying ANYTHING from them...but in this instance...I'm kinda stuck. They also sell the Tourmaster cover for about $50 less that the Star, but them I'm still tied to the dealer (via the gift card). The Tourmaster has a good description of the interior of the cover...the Star has zilch for a description... It's AMAZING the things you learn about a dealership AFTER you buy from them....
massey130 Posted December 30, 2009 #5 Posted December 30, 2009 i would buy the less expensive cover and spend the rest of the gift card on spark plugs. those you can use. It is a shame that, in general, most folks have a less than stellar opinion of dealerships. the minority of us who have good dealerships are in luck.
Tom Posted December 30, 2009 #6 Posted December 30, 2009 I have one and like it. It is soft but I do not remember any grommets at the bottom,it has a stretchy band at the bottom and fits very snug around the entire bottom.(Fits over exhaust and fenders and saddlebags) It is a little bulky compared to some of the aftermarket covers but IF you take the time to store it properly its not too bad..Overall IF you got the money its a perfect fit...Keep it out or off grassy area though as the fabric attracts grass and grassburs VERY easily.
midnightventure Posted December 30, 2009 #7 Posted December 30, 2009 I have the Star cover made for the Venture and it is well made but a lot bulkier than the nylon ones. You can see through it from the inside but it is waterproof. That means it will breath better than the nylon ones IMO.
aharbi Posted December 30, 2009 #8 Posted December 30, 2009 I have one and use it for travel as it packs small. It is waterproof (waterproof coating of some kind) does not have grommets around the bottom nor protective windshield liner, nor the protective silver heat panels (put on when exhaust is cold). Just a basic cover. I also use a Covermax and Dowcow covers which are quit a bit heaver with the grommets and the windshield liner but no trunk liner (never seen one). I'd go with it. Not as light weight (but waterproof) as the nylon covers and not as heavy as a "lined cover. Mine is the all black one on the left as viewed from the rear. Hope this helps. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Montana%201%202009/P8031619.jpg
