I adjusted the air suspension front and rear on my 86 Venture Royale to High on Saturday. It seemed to ride as expected. On Sunday morning before riding I put the bike up on the centre stand and checked the pushed the buttons for high load front and rear. The front took a fraction of a PSI but the rear took a lot. I don't think that is normal. If the shocks don't hold the air pressure over night what is the most likely cause?

Any input will be appreciated.

Air loss could be caused by several things.

  • Loose air inlet valve located in the air inlet fitting
  • Bad air valve in air inlet fitting
  • leak in a hose connection
  • small crack or pin hole in the air line hose
  • Air leak in the shock itself

Suggest taking some mild dish soap and mix a little water with it, (not much water though) and then spray each air connection, the air inlet valve, all the air hoses, then add air to about 75 % capacity and look / watch for air bubbles in the soap..

Do you have numbers on pressures before and after. What I mean is, when the unit started filling the back what was the pressure it dropped down to as it started to fill the back.

Was there a large difference in the temperature between when you filled it the first time and checked it again? I'm thinking that, if the pressure difference was large but not super large the temperature and barometric pressure could have made some difference.

I'd pump it back up and set it down on the ground again and then check every 30 min. or so to see if it loses pressure. Go for a little ride and check it again. If it loses pressure then move on to what Eck suggested.

Just my :2cents:

Did you pump it up while on the center stand??? I believe it would be different if you pumped it up on the side stand and then checked it on the center stand.

I don't believe it should be set on the center stand. Without weight on it you get a false reading.

The manual states to fill on the center stand. As far as the length of time it takes to top off the front vs. the rear, the volume is a lot less in the front shocks. The rear always takes longer. Over night with cooler temps the pressures will always be a bit lower than in the heat of the day. If the pressure is gone completely you have a leak.....
