HI, I need a little help. I am considering a 1984 1200 Venture. It has about 70,000 kms or about 50,000 miles. The problem is 2nd gear. the owner, who was up front thankfully, said that when she rides it, She goes to shift to second gear and it jumps out. She simply shifts from 1st to 3rd. I am assuming the shift fork may be bent???

Any help would be a blessing

I remember the old 1100 Maxims having a second gear issue/. Can this be fixed or does the entire engine need to come out?

The person wants $1900.oo

Merry Christmas

You gotta pull the engine and split the bottom case. It's caused mostly by a "thrust washer" that's worn out and was originally too thin from factory.

There's lots of info about this and Rocket is one member who can be of big help on this.

$1900 is too much when 2nd gear is gone. IMHO

I gotta agree with silvr on this one. $1,900 is a lot with 2nd gear gone. I did mine on the cheap about eleven years ago and later on pulled it again and put a trans in out of an 86. If you have good mechanical skills, it can be fixed without spending a lot, but it is a bit of work.

An '84 with second gear gone is only worth about $500-$600 bucks. $1900 is good for one where the second gear has been repaired. Personally I'd keep shopping....
