friesman Posted December 17, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2009 What year 1300? (86 - up) What year 1200? (83-85) The 1983 were quite different from the 84-85 electrically. Gary I do know of a few ppl that have put the 1300 engine in the 83-85 mk1 when the 2nd gear issue that the 83-85's were known for popped up. It was way easier to replace the engine (and probably cheaper) than fixing the blown 2nd gear. I dont know of any major issues, but if I remember the carbs are jetted a bit different, and bit different wiring and cruise control. StuD Posted December 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2009 The anti dive on the front forks on the 83-85 are hydrolic 86-93 they are electronic. Saddle bags & trunk are smaller on 83-85 86 & up are all royales ie CB Class Radio & Tape player. :canada:
warthogcrewchief Posted December 17, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2009 The exhaust from the MKI (83-85) are different from the MKII (86-93). The TCI is different on the '83 as well. I would not recommend putting a 1200 into a 1300 engine primarily for two reason: the 1300 engines fixed two problems with the 1200 engines 1) the water pump and 2) the split washers that fail on the 2nd gear. skydoc_17 Posted December 17, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2009 Hey Preacherman, What trouble is your friend having with his bike? Unless there is a connecting rod hanging out the side of the block, most things wrong with the 1300 motor can be repaired with a lot less effort than trying to figure out how to put a 1200 motor in a 1300 bike. If you could give us a few more details, I may have some suggestions for you to make this problem easier. If it is something major, I have an extra 1300 motor complete here at the shop if that would help. Earl
Jimod Posted December 22, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 22, 2009 I fitted a '86 1300 motor to my '83 1200. No problems. Just a straight change over. The 1300 had bigger carbs but I just put my 1200 carbs back in to save on cost and it made no difference to performance or fuel economy. The 1200 motor had overheated and cracked a cylinder so I replaced it with the 1300 to get around the 2nd gear problem before it happened. Merry Christmas ! Jim O'D Darwin, Australia.
