If anyone is going to need a valve shim kit and tool in the next week or so, let me know. Dingy has borrowed mine and he could ship it to someone else as easy as he could send it back to me. Its good for 1st gens and 2nd gens.

Hey Randy,

Since we got snow here in Pa., I had planned to change the valve cover gaskets on my 87'VR and what better time to do a valve adjustment. I would be willing to send it on to you or anyone else that has a need after I am done.

Thanks for yor thoughtfullness, :thumbsup2:

I guess this is the list. Earl (skydoc) can forward it on to you when he's done.

It has an assortment of shims, a shim tool, both a magnet for pulling out the shims and a pick made from a churchkey by Dingy, and a shim chart/map by Dingy which you can copy (also posted here on the forum).

I ask that shims used be replaced and as many used shims as possible left over be placed in the kit so the kit grows a bit each time its used to make it easy on the next guy. Your own shims should be shuffled around as much as possible as first choice, then dip into the kit.

Dingy needed a large qty of 2.70 shims which was unexpected, I had 2 of them, but 4 each of the next 4 smaller sizes which was what my reading led me to believe would be the most heavily used as valves tightened up and required smaller shims.

I will want the kit back for the Georgia Maintenance Day in April if it keeps travelling after you're done.

FYI - I am not sure about this, but I don't think the 1st gen motors use the same tool to depress the buckets as the 2nd gens.

Just thought I'd mention that so y'all can do your own research ahead of time and not get surprised once the engine is already open!

It worked OK on my 1st Gen.

Here is a picture for reference.

That's interesting, and good to know. When I did the research last summer looking for the tool, the one I found for the 1st gens was different (and cheaper!) than the one we need for the current bikes. I seem to recall they even look different in the shop manual. But if it worked for you, that's what counts - personal experience beats catalog numbers any time!

One more thought before we let this rest - any chance the difference is between the 1200 and 1300 engines? No, I guess not - it looks like yours is a 1200, right? And the picture you showed is the tool for the 2nd gen bikes.

It is the tool that RandyR had purchased and loaned to me.

He has a RSV I believe. But I don't know if he has used it yet. It looked unused when I got it from him.

The only thing I know for certain is the number that is stamped into tool. -04105, and that it worked OK for me.

I had to make sure it was centered between valves. If I had it off center it would only open 1 valve.

I have a 1200 (1983)

Put me on the list somewhere. I have 76,000 miles on mine and I really need to change a couple of shims.

Ok, You're after TartanTerror.

The tool should work for all 1st and 2nd Gens and early Vmax. I don't know if the new Vmax is the same on top? Anyone know?

Hey Randy,

The new VMAX uses a shim under the bucket, instead of on top of the bucket and is a different diameter and part number than the 1200 Vmax of years gone by. Squeeze is the only guy I know that is going to have a "shim Kit' for that baby for a while to come. I got a chance to see one of these new 1.7L motors "Up Close", there doesn't appear to be a cheap part on that whole motor.:crying:

Earl is right, the VMAX uses Shim under Bucket and you need to undo the Cams to change the Shims. Preliminary, i think they used 9mm Shims. But not only this, you have to dismount the Motor to do the Job .... :255::255: Specs call for Clearance Check at 24000 mls, but I'll do that around 15000 mls.

Nevertheless, I'm really looking forward to the Time where the first Clearance Check needs to be done. Because ... that means a had a Lot of wonderful SMiles on the '09 ... :happy34::happy34::happy34::happy34::crackup:

Regarding the Tool, this Tools works on each of our V4 Variations, 1Gen, Vmax, 2Gen, 1200cc, 1300cc whatever.

I could benefit from the use of the loaner kit. Let me know if it comes available. I have the engine on my bench staring at me now!

Thanks much

ok. Threre are 2 ahead of you, so it may be a while.

For those wanting to borrow the shim kit. I think the rules need to be that any shims used get replaced where there are less than 2 or 4 of that size per origonal kit. Your own shims should be moved around to make fit where ever possible. Any extra shims left over, please put the extras in the kit for the next person.

If I can use it soon, I'll add all the shims out of my parts bike. Is the tool pictured with the kit or not? If not, where do I get one. Can't find the one I had.

Earl (skydoc_17) has it and is waiting on new gaskets to arrive. So I expect he'll be done with it soon. TartanTerror was next on the list, he said he wanted it in January, I'll see what his schedule is.

The shim tool is with the kit. as well as an extractor that Dingy fabricated.
