Freebird Posted December 12, 2009 #2 Posted December 12, 2009 I've never seen one but it's pretty darn cool.
Yammer Dan Posted December 12, 2009 #3 Posted December 12, 2009 Interesting. Gonna add that to your toys??
jlh3rd Posted December 12, 2009 #5 Posted December 12, 2009 germany trained their fighter pilots in those...........that's why they lost the war....
Guest Ken8143 Posted December 12, 2009 #6 Posted December 12, 2009 Did you buy it? Oh man - if only! It has 4 forward speeds. To reverse, you have to turn the engine off, put in reverse, start again and you have 4 reverse gears!

awsmsrv Posted December 12, 2009 #9 Posted December 12, 2009 Yes, my wife & I were really tempted to buy one while in Europe 4 years ago to have shipped back here. I love that little car. They are not cheap now. Is he selling it?
BigBoyinMS Posted December 12, 2009 #10 Posted December 12, 2009 Seen them online and I think I have a diecast in my collection. The only real one that I saw was at the Tupelo, MS auto museum. http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00753.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00755.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00754.jpg
skydoc_17 Posted December 12, 2009 #11 Posted December 12, 2009 Hey Ken, The original version was the KR 175 and production was started in 1955 by Regensburger Stahl- u. Maschinenbau, Regensburg, Germany. It had a single cylinder 2 stroke Fichtel and Sachs motor. It was designed by a German Engineer, Fritz Fend and they were built in the old Messerchmitt Plane factory after world war II from 1955 to 1964. There was a 2 seater model KR 200 and a 1 seater roadster model, KR 201. There were about 40,000 total units made. What a cool Car! Is this a new neighbor of yours?!?! Earl
Guest Ken8143 Posted December 12, 2009 #12 Posted December 12, 2009 Hi Earl - no, not a new neighbor. A buddy was helping me clean out some stuff - actually I gave him a work bench and we hauled it over to his place. His neighbor. Never new a car like that existed!
KarlS Posted December 12, 2009 #13 Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) Yes I have. When I was a kid my friends neighbor had a red one. Got to set in it, I think I was about 13 or 14 at the time. The neighbor had a heavy equipment parts warehouse and would assemble these cars and sell them. Would also see a white and red one once in a while at the AC Spark Plug factory where my Mother worked along with one of those little cars that the whole front of the car, steering wheel and all would swing open so you could get in. abnormalwon Posted December 12, 2009 #14 Posted December 12, 2009 Nice pics. In fact there is a nice Micro Car Museum in Madison Ga. out side Atlanta that we took a tour of last spring at one of our M/E's. Been there twice, neat place.
Sailor Posted December 12, 2009 #15 Posted December 12, 2009 Micro cars are nothing new. A cousin has one of those on his farm. Scrips-Booth built cars with motorcycle engines back in the early 1900's. Morgan cars got their start building three wheelers with motorcycle engines.
BigBoyinMS Posted December 13, 2009 #16 Posted December 13, 2009 Here's a Morgan and Isetta from the same museum. http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00828.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00827.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00826.jpg http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww202/BigBoyinMS/DSC00825.jpg
BOO Posted December 13, 2009 #17 Posted December 13, 2009 Several years ago there was one of those things in a nearby town (Woodstock) and the guy drove it quite a bit and even drove it to work. I've forgot how long ago but it was for sale and it seems like the guy wanted 3 or 4 grand for it. It was one of the front opening ones. I also got the impression that it would only do maybe 40 or 45 miles an hour. Cute but not something I would want. But at least you would be dry I guess. BOO
Wanderer Posted December 13, 2009 #18 Posted December 13, 2009 Sorta looks like the martian taxi from "Total Recall".
Aussie Annie Posted December 13, 2009 #19 Posted December 13, 2009 Hey Ken, You bring back such memories with those pics. My widowed aunt, with six! children had a "schmitt" and we used to pack into it like sardines when I was a kid. You'd be amazed at how many kids' we could get in there, but needed someone on the outside to shut the lid It was a real case of "Stack 'em and rack 'em"
barend Posted December 13, 2009 #20 Posted December 13, 2009 Yepppers, i've seen 'em up close and personal. The newest version is called a "smart" car i believe:whistling:
Condor Posted December 13, 2009 #21 Posted December 13, 2009 (edited) There were quite a few neat 'little' cars available in the late 50's to mid 60's. Here's one that most people have never even heard of. Lloyd. I owned a '59 and it was my primary transportation while going to college. Air cooled 30hp, 5sp, front wheel drive, 35mpg. Drove the 'H' out of it for 5 or 6 years. Bought it brand new for $999 out the door. I might also add I don't think I could get in one now.... Was a lot skinnier back then.... yamadawg Posted December 13, 2009 #23 Posted December 13, 2009 I had never seen one of those. Very cool! Thank you for sharing and inspiring all of the responses and photos! I bet it would be really neat to drive one of those, I just would not want it to be my primary transportation...
Evan Posted December 13, 2009 #24 Posted December 13, 2009 A guy in Chatham, Ontario where I used to live had several of these and would tell me stories about their history. If I recall from his stories, they might have become the "peoples car" in Germany except for other circumstances. In any event, I sometimes followed him on some local rides on my motorcycle. It was amazing to see how nimble and quick they were.
KiteSquid Posted December 13, 2009 #25 Posted December 13, 2009 They used one in the movie Brazil for Sam to drive http://www.ooyay.com/pics/brazil/PDVD_003.jpg But I think the added a bumper to the front... http://www.ooyay.com/pics/brazil/PDVD_005.jpg
