Pardon my ignorance if this sounds like a dumb question.

The piece in question is number 4 in the picture. The bike only has one on the left side and it makes taking off the seat a hassle because it's doesn't allow full access for my socket wrench. Granted I could always get a socket that doesn't requre a step down adapter.

I took it off to make it easier to remove the seat.

How important is this piece and am I supposed to have one on the right side too? http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk86/jason1gp/random/cylinderhead.jpg

OH Man you better get that back in one heck of a hurry. :yikes:

The Safety Chrome Committee will be hunting you down in no time flat. Don't ever take chrome off for any reason.

Glad we caught you in time before the chrome gods heard about it! LOL

I removed mine a long time ago. Its only on the left side - the way your bike leans when on the side stand so if you spill any fuel it will run down and be directed away from your hot pipe.

Is this where a RSTD differs from a Venture? I have the cover only on the left side, but my seat is held on with that big inset hex head... I use a 6" long T-handle allen wrench. Do Ventures use bolts?

Ventures have studs mounted in the seat that set down into two hole and a nut is screwed on from the bottom

That is why 2nd Gen'rs never have a screw loose but their nuts can fall off. :moon:

Mine sure does; but only when I am on it. :smile5: :Venture:

The plate that you are asking about, I was told by a fellow member, is there to keep gas spillage from draining down on the cylinder head. I suspect it also would keep water from collecting too (when on the sidestand).

I have seen many of our bikes with that plate on the right (wrong) side of the bike too - where it serves ABSOLUTELY NO purpose what-so-ever. This, incidentally, is how I found out what that silly plate is for (mine was on the wrong side). As others have said now, I doubt it will do you any harm by taking it off... As long as you keep your gas in the tank.

I have a friend who's is install on the wrong (right) side. Those geniuses at Yamaha have a habit of installing those plates and the antenna's backwards.

As for the seat nuts. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet wit a 10mm deep dish socket. I sent one of my seats to the Butt Butler and he sent it back with the knurled plastic washers that are pressed onto the 10mm nuts and they work great. He sells them in the classified section and well worth the price.

Jason,

You don't have to worry about needing this piece and I have had mine off for years. Like you, it just got in the way of getting the seat nuts off and on.

And you want a replacement solution that will allow you to remove your seat without any tools, I make up a set of thumb nuts (that YamaDuck mentioned) that will not loosen up and fall off:

Hope this helps,
