ferroussphinx Posted December 11, 2009 #1 Posted December 11, 2009 :322:i am looking for a helmet to fit my almost three year old son any help would be awesome
straycatt Posted December 11, 2009 #2 Posted December 11, 2009 I've had a number of lids for kids. he he he Most bought locally at Indie bike/snowmobile shops, or hand me downs. Look for BMX or off road DOT hats. A couple of pointers if I may. The smaller the rider, the less developed their neck muscles are, so they need the lightest helmet possible. Everyone wants to put a FF on their kid but often they can't hold their head up with a FF hat on it. When my oldest girl started street riding with me at 5 years old, the only lid that she could wear was an 3/4 open face. All of the kids (4 years and up) that ride sleds with me have a very hard time holding up an FF. Especially on rough trails. I put them in front of me and sort of cradle their helmeted head in between my arms and steady them by hand when needed. I am all for kids on bikes/quads/sleds/go carts/etc. Just be aware of their strength limitations.
Sheradan Posted December 11, 2009 #3 Posted December 11, 2009 Isn't there a law about being able to reach the foot pegs?
Bummer Posted December 12, 2009 #5 Posted December 12, 2009 I'm pretty sure Indiana law specifies that a passenger's feet must be able to touch both the passenger pegs/boards at the same time. That was definitely the case in the early 90s. Of course it might have changed since then. On the other hand, it is Indiana...

I may be wrong , but I thought most states required sufficient height to reach the pegs.... But even if the law doesn't require it.....Wouldn't want my 7 year old grand-kid on a bike..... There is a proper time for everything.......
Yammer Dan Posted December 12, 2009 #7 Posted December 12, 2009 I think I've had all mine for a ride before they were 7. What about a one legged passenger??

I can't speak to what other States do. It wouldn't surprise me if that were the case, though.
RedRider Posted December 12, 2009 #9 Posted December 12, 2009 The law in WI is 8 yo minimum. The other issue is balance when they fall asleep. If you keep the rides short, I don't think it is an issue. However, kids have a tendency to fall asleep when they are moving (remember taking your crying child for a ride in the car/van to quiet them). Kids younger than about 8 do not have balance when they are asleep. Older than that and they do. That's why young children fall out of bed and older ones don't. Be very careful. This is an accident I know I would have immense difficulty living with. RR
