Passing Lamp Spacer Bolts

Problem:

One of the common complaints about the Yamaha passing light kit for the RSV is that it mounts so close to the fairing that removing the fairing becomes very difficult requiring one to either remove or loosen the passing light bracket.

Installation:

When the bracket arrives you will need 2 3/8" NC x 3/4" long bolts and lock washers. I got these at Home Depot for under two bucks. Undo your light bar.

Use the 8mm bolts to fasten the bracket where the light bar was and then

using the 3/8" bolts bolt the light bar to the bracket. Most of us that have

the bracket can now split the fairing without touching the light bar or at

least just loosening it a few turns. Might depend on the actual lights you

have.

Basically you undo the light bar, put the bracket where the bar was, then

mount the light bar to the bracket!

How to get one:

You can contact me at dathan@shaw.ca

The price at this time is $27.50 USD. That includes the postage as well!

The following are some shots I've taken in the past! #5 shows the clearance

between the back of the light and the fairing. This started as a way of my

being able to clean between the light and the fairing. Taking the fairing

off without touching the light bar was just a huge bonus!

Sorry to bring this up again, but, I can't find these bolts at Home Depot or anywhere else. Must they be this exact size? The salesman I spoke with didn't know what NC was. I don't either. And is it two & three eighths by three quarters or the quantity 2 of size three eighths by three quarters. Could the NC mean non-corrosive, i.e., stainless steel? Finally, what do the numbers refer to? As you can see, I'm not too mechanical. Thanks in advance for being gentle. LOL

Thanks for that fella's mine just arrived in the mail :thumbsup2:

Are yo trying to keep QuickStep busy or what? Or better yet WHY?

I hope you got the bolts with the spacer because finding (2) 3/8" NC(16tpi) x 3/4" long bolts could be a problem in OZ won't it.

So with this mod, if I am not mistaken the passing lamp will appear to be about an inch or so forward aft to the headlight. Does it appear to be sticking out in front?

With mine it moves the mount out 1 1/2" and down I believe and inch or so. And no it does not give the look that it sticks out. I think it appears more natural and it should have been designed that way from the start.

If Yamaha wanted to make servicing and warrantee work easier and cheaper they would have made these and it would have come on the bike stock. :2cents:

Well, we don't all agree on the looks of the spacer bracket - I know that some say they like it, but personally, I think it looks all wrong and terrible with the passing lights further forward than the stock headlight. Oh well, to each his or her own! My choice was to simply make the existing spacers a bit longer to get the lights to clear the fairing but not look like they are in a different position. Yes, I still have to remove the bolts to split the fairing, but that doesn't bother me at all.

i'm not crazy with the look either....i prefer the harley look.....but i'm always messing around inside the fairing, so it does make it easier........i also would be interested in a different mod

I don't care at all for the Yamaha passing lamps ... to me they just don't take on a "natural" look ... not really sure what does. What I installed looks a whole lot better IMHO.

Maybe a set of lights "frenched" into the fairing ... one on each side of the headlight would look good... similar to what's on the new Kaw Voyager.

Another Couple Questions:

I don't need anything more than the 2 bolts & 2 lock washers? Don't I need nuts on the back of the bolts? (No wise cracks, either.)

Do the rubber bumpers on the fork wind deflectors still work in the new position?

You do not need bolts on the new bolts, the spacer should be threaded to accept the new bolts which are used to attach the light bar to the spacer. The bolts that origionally held the light bar will be used to attach the spacer to the bike.

Also, the rubber on the wind deflectors will no longer work. So, you can either rework them or they will eventually fail. OR, you can buy a set of wind deflectors from Ruffy which are much better and do not use the yamaha mounts and will not fail. I have the deflectors on my bike and they are well worth the money and don't cost much more than a new set of mounts for your plastic deflectors.

Need to be able to get my hand behind the lamps when polishing :thumbsup2: and I'm sure my mechanic (Quickstep) will come up with something. "Why" 'cause he's the best!!:clap2::clap2:

I agree with you totally. I like the lights to set back on the bike just as they were designed to do on the venture. Its really not hard to loosen and/or remove the passing lights to split the fairing. I always put a sheet on my front fender and lay the lights on it to protect the bike. Not hard to do. I agree also. I have never liked the lights moved out. Not only that but I think that it increased the likelihood of your lower deflectors breaking off. They have a rubber bumper that should touch the upper fork covers. That prevents them from vibrating in the wind too much. They can still break but having the bumper touching the forks sure prolongs the life of those brackets.
