junkyardog53 Posted December 6, 2009 #1 Posted December 6, 2009 once again i look for everyones wisdom, want to put passing lights on. i know yamaha has them but where else should i be looking? also i want to be seen from the rear.what's the best set up and where can i find that? thanks for any help.......BOB
Sylvester Posted December 6, 2009 #2 Posted December 6, 2009 I know of no one else but Yamaha for the passing lights. Go to Diamond R for their rear light, it is very popular and bright and is very easy to install.
Monsta Posted December 6, 2009 #3 Posted December 6, 2009 For simple rear lighting you could use the existing reflector bases, go get some LED side marker lights from NAPA or Wal-mart and wire them into your running light wire. See my gallery.
Hulk Posted December 7, 2009 #4 Posted December 7, 2009 Hey Bob, I did the reflector to LED conversion (http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38596&highlight=reflectors) and mounted them on the back of my saddlebag guards and actually very happy with them. Wired them to the brakes and friends of mine have said that it really makes me stick out when I apply the brakes.
TDbiker Posted December 7, 2009 #5 Posted December 7, 2009 I also wanted to be seen from the rear, so I installed a run/turn/brake controller from Kuryakyn. Also had to change the rear turn signals from amber to red. Here are the part numbers I used: RTB Controller: Kuryakyn p/n 4710 ($69.99) Red Lenses: Kuryakyn p/n 2267 ($10.99 pr) Easy installation and not too expensive.
bamico Posted December 7, 2009 #6 Posted December 7, 2009 Bob, Its a little pricey, but you can get a color matching trunk wing with a strip of LEDs in it from Yamaha. I have one on my bike and it does brighten up the back end. Bob
bamico Posted December 7, 2009 #7 Posted December 7, 2009 JYD53, Just noticed you have an 07 Blue/Black. That's the same bike I have. FYI - You can only get the rear light wing in Black, not the Blue. Mine is black and it looks fine. If you go that route, check out Accessories4bikes.com, it'll save you some $ over buying direct from Yamaha... ~20% I believe. You can just barely see it in the attached picture. Look below the luggage rack on the cover of the trunk. I'm afraid I don't have any pictures from the back or of it lit, but I now I've seen other members with shots of it. Hope this helps. Good luck with the decision. Bob
aharbi Posted December 7, 2009 #8 Posted December 7, 2009 ...also i want to be seen from the rear.what's the best set up and where can i find that?... You could add the Harley Davidson License Plate Rail and Light Kit By Harley Davidson Part # HD-68280-97B It bolts right on. You have to cut the plug and splice into the Yamaha wire behind the license plate. Took me all of maybe 30 minutes. The best price I found was at http://www.zanottimotor.com/ I paid $166.05.
Norm Posted December 7, 2009 #9 Posted December 7, 2009 My '99 already had the Harley light set on the back so I bought a replacement for the tail light bulb. It is a board of LED lights that fit right into the stock lens and plug into the regular light socket. Here is the web page for bikerhiway.com where I got them. http://www.bikerhiway.com/led-tail-light-for-yamaha-road-star-and-vstar-p-176.html I also bought a LED strip that screws in right at the bottom of the trunk but I can't remember who I bought it from. I thought it was big bike parts.com but I just went on their sight and couldn't find it. The guys last year at Pork in the Pines said it made a big difference and made the back end very visible. Norm

You can find this assembly on eBay used or Brand New. Only basic tools needs and as stated, perhaps just 30 minutes of your time. BTW, I got my lights via eBay used from a HD owner.
scooter45 Posted December 8, 2009 #11 Posted December 8, 2009 I found these on J & P cycle. I put the venture in as the bike and they came up with these, not any cheaper. http://www.jpcycles.com/search/ProductDetail?sku=ZZ32078&N=2761610%202757834%20275082&Ne=755118&Ntk=All&Ntt=&Ns=DefaultSort&results=10&Nao= http://www.jpcycles.com/search/ProductDetail?sku=ZZ33116&N=2761610%202757834%20275082&Ne=755118&Ntk=All&Ntt=&Ns=DefaultSort&results=10&Nao=
LilBeaver Posted December 8, 2009 #12 Posted December 8, 2009 I am suprised that no one has mentioned this yet... I (and many others here) have put a 15" light bar, mounted between the helmet locks. Mine cost me about $20 from a local truck stop and $0.50 in two bolts, lock washers and nuts. http://signaldynamics.com/products/LightBars/15ultra.asp (Pretty much what I have) I also put in a 32LED board in the tail lamp (plug and play right in the light bulb socket). That was a little more expensive, but it IS very VERY visible, even in the day time. http://www.bikerhiway.com/led-tail-light-for-yamaha-road-star-and-vstar-p-176.html I believe I got mine for 40 or 45 from here, looks like the price went up. You may be able to find it cheaper else where. I'll see about taking some pictures when I get home (since I don't have my camera now). Hope that helps.

ronhenry4 Posted March 25, 2010 #16 Posted March 25, 2010 jpcycles has a good selection of passing lights
Seaking Posted March 25, 2010 #17 Posted March 25, 2010 here what I have done to mine so far > The bag guards, rails, where are these obtained from? I have the light kit that fits under the bags requiring you to lower the pipes which I end up dragging, I like the added lights in the bag for better visibility..
short-haul Posted March 26, 2010 #18 Posted March 26, 2010 I made them from 18 gauge 304 stainless cut 3/4 " larger the bent the top and bottom 3/8" in 30 degrees. and used stainless rivets to attach to rails
