barend Posted November 21, 2009 #1 Posted November 21, 2009 After working all day, I (we) caught the back end of this movie (again). It is a powerfull story which left us with a lump in our throat and a tear in our eyes. I can't help but get pi$$ed off by the insult made against these brave men who gave so much for our freedom.
barend Posted November 21, 2009 Author #2 Posted November 21, 2009 yeah, yeah, I know!! But someone has to say it!!
RandyR Posted November 22, 2009 #3 Posted November 22, 2009 its been a few years since I saw the movie. what was the insult? I don't remember.
midnite Posted November 22, 2009 #4 Posted November 22, 2009 The insult was when the men and women came back home. Protesters, being called child killers, etc....They did what they had to do survive, you never knew if the man, woman, or child coming up to you had a grenade or what. Fought they're souls out and come back home to ridicule.
oldgoat Posted November 22, 2009 #5 Posted November 22, 2009 getting called baby killer and stuff like that was a insult. but didnt the movie saving private ryan was based on ww2. after all they where fighting german soldiers in that movie if i recall? ryans brothers where all killed and he was to be sent home as the last surving son. latter on in real war time. as i recall there was something passed called the sullivan. law. in the military. all the sullivans died. something like seven of them and there was no remaing sons left for this poor family to carry on the name. so it was passed that if brothers where in combat and only one survived the military would try to get the remaining son back to the family with a honorable discharge. now i am a army vet served almost 15 years. and i have great pride in what our military. does. i see a young man come home i shake his hand and say thank you.
barend Posted November 23, 2009 Author #6 Posted November 23, 2009 How do I explain without making this too political?! I come from a country where there is a socialist democrary (if such a thing even truely exists), restrictions on everything you might want to do, taxes out the whazoo, a political system where there are dozens of political parties all vying for a piece of power. The United States of America is heading the same direction and though it's been happening for a long time, since "the new deal" and possibly before, the pace is accelerating. People are too willing to give up their rights for "freebies". The men who fought in WWII fought to maintain our Constitution and Bill of Rights, to preserve freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the right to bear arms, the persuit of happiness .... For me, the insult to that generation is the continuous stripping away of liberties and rights at an ever increasing rate.

Excellent Barend! You hit it on the nose. I have a friend whose dad was captured by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge. His dad is 90 yrs old this year and was made Grand Marshall of a local holiday parade. He went a long time without getting any recognition for his contribution to our country. Glenn
