BigBoyinMS Posted November 15, 2009 #1 Posted November 15, 2009 I dropped by a dealer today and got into a conversation with the used bike manager. I commented that it looked like Yamaha was dropping the RSTD and replacing it with the Stratoliner Deluxe. He said that he made the same comment to the district rep and was told that it was just taking a one year break but the 'model' would be back in the 2011 model year. That much was supposedly straight from the company but the two of them were supposing the break was to totally redesign the bike, bigger FI engine, etc. and if they update the RSTD then the RSV has to be changed too. Yeah, I know. Until it actually happens... it's just rumor.
Brake Pad Posted November 15, 2009 #2 Posted November 15, 2009 I sure hope they take some ideas from the goldwing, on how to make a awesome drive shaft. cause, theirs SUCKS!!!!
footsie Posted November 16, 2009 #3 Posted November 16, 2009 If they totally redesign I hope they go to a belt.
pegscraper Posted November 16, 2009 #4 Posted November 16, 2009 I saw a biker on the side of the road earlier this year with a broken drive belt, and heard about too many more. I won't have a bike with a drive belt.
yamadawg Posted November 16, 2009 #5 Posted November 16, 2009 Just curious... Brake Pad said: I sure hope they take some ideas from the goldwing, on how to make a awesome drive shaft. cause, theirs SUCKS!!!! What is the problem with the drive shaft? I've went through a 750 Maxim and 3 Ventures with no issues with the drive shaft. Am I running on luck? What issues should I expect?

UPON FURTHER INSPECTION................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... THE DRIVESHAFT TURNS. ISSUE SOLVED. Now I'm intrigued.
Wanderer Posted November 16, 2009 #7 Posted November 16, 2009 Let's see 2011? I'll still have 120 payments on the one I have now:bang head:.
CMIKE Posted November 16, 2009 #8 Posted November 16, 2009 I do not know all the figures on reliablity of the belt drive motorcycle...but I do know every time my buddy carries his other brand motorcycle to get the regular service ( that cost a bunch of money) they adjust and inspect his drive belt. He has never so far had a belt failure. Seems to me the shaft drive is the way to go on the new design 2011 Venture...I believe it is less maintenance for a shaft drive and as Brake Pad kinda indicated...I have never heard of a GW having dirve pin or needing to grease thier drive splines to quiet it down. But neither have I had to do it on my 08 Vstar custom. I also hear the new KAW tourer has a Carbon fiber or some kind of super belt for the drive...I heard they had some issues early on with belt squeeking as you slow down. I think they may have that issue resolved now. I think I would prefer a shaft drive on the new design...but if it has a belt...I will probably learn to adjust/inpsect it on a regular basis. I think if Yamaha will built it...folks will buy it...BUT there must be jobs and money left over from the inflation that is coming to buy the newly designed bike.
TEW47 Posted November 16, 2009 #9 Posted November 16, 2009 Go to other froms for bikes that have belt drives and see how much trouble they have with them. tew47
Chaharly Posted November 16, 2009 #10 Posted November 16, 2009 I hope they make it more like the first gen! Boy i tell yah, that got me excited!!!
OB-1 Posted November 16, 2009 #11 Posted November 16, 2009 I'd go back to chain drive before I went to a belt. Chains make more noise, require oiling and adjustment, but they don't break without warning. All that said, I'll stay with a drive shaft.
BigBoyinMS Posted November 16, 2009 Author #12 Posted November 16, 2009 I've had a lot of belt driven bikes and have no problem with them but I like gears and metal too. I hope Royals stay shaft driven.
CrazyHorse Posted November 16, 2009 #13 Posted November 16, 2009 I hope they do something no matter what it looks like. Just pull the trigger Yamaha.
footsie Posted November 17, 2009 #14 Posted November 17, 2009 Guys I don't know about hear say on the belts, but I do know several guys with road star and harley's with near or over a 100,000 miles on a belt. Bobby's electra glide has 57,000 miles on the factory belt and it still looks fine, Karren 99 Road Star has its factory belt. I looked on her forum and only saw a couple of belt issues which misalignment was the stated blame.
flb_78 Posted November 17, 2009 #15 Posted November 17, 2009 I broke 3 belts on my Roadstar in 40,000 miles. The last one pissed me off really bad and I sold the damn thing. I won't own another belt driven bike. Some folks may get that kind of mileage on a belt, but they ride like the guys that get 25,000 miles on a Dunlop 404.
