saddlebum Posted November 14, 2009 #1 Posted November 14, 2009 (edited) STREET LEGAL BUMPER CARS It's easy for a gear-head to be discouraged about the state of the world, especially in times of Carpocalypse and Cash for Clunkers. But occasionally, a bright light of awesome renews the spirit. Road-legal bumper cars do just that. Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal. EitherKawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines for power, and retired vintage bumper car bodies - transformed into the most awesome form of mini-car we've ever seen. There's seven of these little monsters floating aroundCalifornia, and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a gyro-gear loose builder on the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap. They were originally powered by Harley engines but rattled like heck and Tom replace them with Honda or Kawasaki 750's... and a couple have been 'measured' [not run at] theoretically as capable of 160 MPH which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase. Doesn't mean we would totally rock one should the opportunity present itself. In fact, we now have only one burning desire, to see these things running a go kart track with a clown in the drivers seat. Edited November 16, 2009 by saddlebum

OldBear Posted November 14, 2009 #5 Posted November 14, 2009 Kinda gives new meaning to the phrase "unsafe at any speed" don't it? Let's see, short wheelbase, fairly high cg... I love it....looks like they'd be a hoot to play with!
KiteSquid Posted November 15, 2009 #6 Posted November 15, 2009 (edited) For the original web page, click HERE And it looks like he bought the bumper car bodies from these fine people Edited November 16, 2009 by KiteSquid
mraf Posted November 16, 2009 #7 Posted November 16, 2009 Must be nice to be able to build something street legal from scratch. NYS would have a field day in putting up roadblocks to stop this kind of ingenuity from ever hitting the streets. If they can't hook-up their state computer to it. BUZZ. Inspection failure. NOPE, NA-DA, FRONT FLIP, BACK FLIP your done. If this sort of innovation could be easily licensed again {if meeting all safety guidelines} maybe someone, somewhere could hit on a idea for the next Model A {A vehicle for the masses}. I know it is a reach, but with all the laws on the books anymore. I feel that they seem to do nothing more than stifle experimentation and innovation. Not meant to be political just fact. From trying to exist here. By the way they would be a riot to drive.
