A friend of mine has a VTX1800, the oil dipstick broke off and fell into the engine. So far he has not been able to get it out. I have a strong magnet , hoping he can slide it up to the oil filler hole. If not will he have to split the cases? Does not have the money to take it to the shop. Any suggestions?

A good light and hemostats would be my first try. If it is ferris metal the magnet could work. You should be able to get it by pulling the side cover at the worse case. Good luck Rod

I had an 03 1300VTX and the dipstick was steel, I would think a magnet would work fine, some of those magnets on end of a telescoping rods are amazingly strong.

Be careful with those telescoping magnets. Some of them will pull off if you get it hung on something in there. But yea, it's worth a try.
