I have an opprotunity to puchase a set on 2001 Road King exhaust pipes for $100. They are new, meaning he took them off when he bought the bike. What would I need to install on my RSTD?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

i also have an 07 RSTD with RK mufflers (from http://www.zzchops.com/) - you will also need to purchase the chrome clamp (pictured in the ebay ad). i thought i purchased the clamps from someone on this forum?? i needed to saw off a small portion of one pipe (i think it was the right side) to make the chrome clamp fill in the gap.

Haven't I seen some posts where some HD dealers throw them in the dumpster?

The dealer here sure doesn't toss 'em. They wanted 75 bucks for a set of take-offs....not new. So I bought a set off Ebay for 18 bucks and 20 bucks shipping....stock and undrilled.

OK, I admit this is a noobie question but here goes:

What's the difference between stock exhaust & HD Road Kings, other than the obvious looks? I'm happy with the sound of the OEM's on my '05 RSTD. I like the deep note; don't want anything louder.

Any particular year(s) required (HD's) to fit our bikes?

Thanks,

Glenn

If you are happy with the stock mufflers, there is absolutely nothing to gain with the HD mufflers. They are very slightly louder but not much. Many people drill them to get a louder sound. The looks are very similar. They can be found either straight cut which look very similar to your stock mufflers or slash cut which do give them a different look. Any mufflers off a Road King will work but the later models have a catalytic converter in one side that will need to be broken out. I'm not sure what year they started doing that.

Thanks for the info Freebird, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I plan to keep the stockers.

I got mine for $0 by asking a dealer for take-offs. They have a guy come every few months to recycle the pile they generate, and they were happy to give me a set.

I got brackets for $40 off this site and clamps for $30 (?).

If these videos link, here are my stock pipes and my undrilled Road Kings. They are not much louder than stock, but are a bit. I like how they sound under load (read: accelerating fast)... kinda like an F1 race car. At cruise and idle, they are similar. One unexpected benefit to me is that I learned to love the higher revs because I can hear them.

According to [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=273218&postcount=2]this post[/ame]:

Here are the P/N's (part numbers) you are looking for....

They will end with the following numbers if they are non-catalyst mufferls off a touring HD.

95

95a

98

or 98a

Make sure you check the P/N's on BOTH mufflers

The number in the listing (65591-06 65592-06) doesn't look like ones I've seen. Not that I've seen many, mind you.

Why does one muffler look longer than the other???:scared:

I'll go out on a limb and say that the brackets are the same size. They are just like the ones I bought, and they overlay perfectly on top of each other. With that in mind, I will propose that any size difference is an optical illusion. Closer objects appear larger.
