I was just thinking that I am probably one of the youngest kids out there who actually have bought one of these themselves. dynodon Posted November 7, 2009 #10 Posted November 7, 2009 Welcome Chaharly, I agree, takes some guts to go with your own kind of ride! I am early 60's and have an '86 VR. Love it! Makes me feel like I am 16 again (almost) Lots of good people here, even a few youngsters, and a LOT of us are young at heart. A good motorcycle will do that. Be safe, take all the riding courses you can, MSF etc. I remember my first motorcycle when I was 19, and I thought I was invincible. NEver wrecked hard, but did get the attention of a state cop one day who read me the riot act about how he "is tired of scraping up jerks like me from the road!" (direct quote) I did take that advice and became a bit more reserved. Kids and life took me from my motorcycle and then all of a sudden I am older and need new hips, more years away from the bike. Now with bionic joints and the realization if I don't do it now, I may never get the chance, I bought my '86 almost four years ago and haven't let it sit much since. Even though I live in Illinois, I ride year round. Am leading a group today on a two hour ride ending up at a good BBQ place. Again, welcome, send some pics, and ride safe!
chabicheka Posted November 7, 2009 #11 Posted November 7, 2009 hey chaharly...... i really think you should at your age, start with something a wee bit smaller and lighter for a couple of years, anyway. this is just my opinion. please do not take offense to this. its just a fatherly instinct in me saying this. what ever you decide, wish you a safe and enjoyable life. i admire your guts, though.
V7Goose Posted November 7, 2009 #12 Posted November 7, 2009 Glad to see you here! You certainly are in the minority, buying a touring bike so early, but I think it is a great choice. I bought my first touring bike, a fully dressed Moto Guzzi Ambassador when I was 16 also - that was way back in 1971, and I've never had any use for other types of bikes since then! If ya like to ride, then there is just nothing better than a touring bike. Stay safe and keep in touch. That bike you bought is a good one, but you'll probably need the help of the good folks here to maintain one that old. Goose

I started off on a 78 Suzuki GS750E... and it did not take me long to want to get on a real touring bike... not that I didn't ride long distances on my 750 - but I quickly moved up to a wing and now I'm on a venture (2nd Gen). Still have all 3 of those bikes; and I've had some others along the way but these 3 are def. my favorite. Safety course (if you have not taken one yet) is definitely a good idea and as long as you respect your machine and drive within your abilities you ought to be able to handle it just fine! By the way, I still haven't seen pictures yet!!

Now in response to some of these other posts...I'm going to be honest. While I'm ONLY 54, they say that you are as old as you feel. That being the case, I think I'm about 85. The past year has NOT been good to me but I sure plan for it to get better. At this time, I'm about blind in my right eye, almost deaf in my left ear and I've got gout which has really started flaring up more often over the past few months. Otherwise, I'm just a lean, mean, fighting machine.

Snarley Bill Posted November 7, 2009 #22 Posted November 7, 2009 i started riding in the 50's. could'nt afford nothing store bought so i built my own. started out with motorized home made bicycles and finally bought a 49 cushman road king for $15.00. it was a father and son project. my first store bought motorcycle was a brand new 67 suzuki x-6 hustler. very fast for a 250 cc. it would do 106 mph. flat out with the wind. the rest is history, i had the need for speed. i am 66 years old now and have a 200+ mph zx-14. just don't have the balls i once had so i finally have come to realize it's to fast for me. it's going on the auction block one of these days. i just have to run it out before i get rid of it. lol.

ArticusMedicus Posted November 8, 2009 #24 Posted November 8, 2009 16!!! WOWSERS! I'm only 37 now but when I was 16 I didn't believe that there was a need for road bikes. Roads were only there to get the truck to the pit to ride. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed my First gen.

Four GS850Gs and my favorite, the GS1100GK. The latter I rode for 9 riding seasons, and sold it in 2008 with 133,000 miles. I still participate in the GSResources website, as I have fond memories of all those GS years. http://www.thegsresources.com The GK was my all-time favorite motorcycle. I sometimes regret having sold it, but "the boss" said one bike only -- which is fine, given what a good bike the Venture is. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
