It is because of the heat. Diesel oil will take the heat with out breaking down as fast as regular oil. Rod

My brother in law bought a new 07. He installed an Oil Temp Gauge.

Results:

Oil temp running at 268 deg F. In Los Angeles area, in the summer.

He installed an Oil Cooler, and a few other things, to get it down to about 210 deg F.

Heavy-duty (diesel) motor oils like Chevron Delo and Shell Rotella have an additive package that's good for motorcycles and they don't have any friction modifiers (good thing).

I switched to Shell Rotella a few years ago (5-40 Fall/Spring...15-40 Summer) and have been very impressed with the results. I think many people are finally beginning to see this a very good motorcycle oil with other benefits. Once I switched the shifting clunk that is common with the Wing, disappeared in my bike (another benefit) never to return.

That actually sounds a little to cool at 210. The Harley I had had an oil cooler on it and in cool weather it would cause the engine to run to cold and I would have to run it on choke. I also had a cover for the cooled and that would cause it to be okay.

Maybe 210 is okay but I would think the oil would want to be much warmer then that.
