83VR3711 Posted November 3, 2009 #1 Posted November 3, 2009 Incase anybody is interested, I have some pics of a dipstick with the dimensions. You know...just incase somebody wants to make an accurate one for themselves. I hope these help.
Squidley Posted November 3, 2009 #2 Posted November 3, 2009 This is kinda funny, I have owned 4 1st gens and I have never seen the "dipstick" that came with the bike well except for Dano, he came with his '84 one M&E
painterman67 Posted November 3, 2009 #3 Posted November 3, 2009 I was just thinking and yes the smoke is rising . Why do you need one just put her up on the center stand and look in the site glass David
SilvrT Posted November 3, 2009 #5 Posted November 3, 2009 and here I thought this thread was about a cager...
Kirby Posted November 3, 2009 #6 Posted November 3, 2009 I'd kinda like one sometimes for my 2nd gen. It doesn't come with a centerstand and it's kinda hard to check without someone to help. A mirror is the only answer unless you take time to put it up on the jack. Just think it would be easier to check while sitting on the bike.

I set mine on 2 blocks of 2x4 (the sidestand)... it is so close to level..but just enuf off to cause a bit more weight to the left .. I then step off the right while I hold pressure against the left thru either the handlebars or the seat... I can then stoop down to see that the oil level is where it should be (above or below center) and that's about as close as ya can get. Works for me.

Blue Giant Posted November 3, 2009 #10 Posted November 3, 2009 That dipstick is used to measure the middle and final drive fluid level on XS1100 and XJ1100 bikes. I believe on the 1st gen Ventures, the final drive is filled to the bottom of the threaded portion of the fill port when the bike is sitting level on the main stand. (no dipstick required)

Zfrebird4 Posted November 4, 2009 #14 Posted November 4, 2009 Anyone every thought of making one? I would need the measurements by someone who has one off as a part to sell, from the bottom of the bottle to the first (low) mark, then to the Second (full) mark. I think the dowell should be just large enough to go through the opening, and yet not fall out when just tucked in 'down there someplace!' I think t he reserve bottle must be darkening with age. Even the brightest flashlight didn't help my wrench; so this is his idea. Thanks. JackZ
