dingy Posted October 31, 2009 #1 Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) I am in the process of installing cruise control on my 1983 Venture Standard. I have purchased almost all of the items I need to do this upgrade from ebay. Prior to installing the parts, I will be disassembling the ones that I can and cleaning them. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the throttle side switch housing that came off of a 1988 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. It is fairly lengthy, 41 pictures, but thorough. I would recommend removing switch from bike if you perform this cleaning. There are a number of small springs and ball detents that are very easy to lose unless you have a large well lit working area. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. Let me know if you find this helpful, as I also have the left side controls, brake and clutch switches I can do. Picture below is of the switch detailed in this PDF file. Yammer Dan Posted November 1, 2009 #3 Posted November 1, 2009 (edited) 85 is different!! I need to do mine cruise doesn't like to hold at times and I've been a little leary about taking it apart. Wintertime project is to pull dash and grease everything in there. Tach has slows and speedo sticks at times. Got a bulb that needs replaced. THAT IS A GREAT Write-up. CrazyHorse Posted November 1, 2009 #4 Posted November 1, 2009 Nice write up. I did this cleaning a couple months age and of course broke the black plastic tang that held the cruise cut off switch together. Ended up needing to buy the whole control set. Not the easiest job in the world but with your instructions it should help people with what to expect. Thanks Dingy.
Evan Posted November 2, 2009 #5 Posted November 2, 2009 Gary, want to add my thanks for this great job you have done putting this info with pics together. I'm sure it will help many of us with 1st gen bikes, including me. In addition to my cruise cancelling on its own occasionally, my start switch recently stuck in the start position, causing some other electrical problems.
