Jeff: Do you have to remove the left fairing just to get the carbs out???

While changing out the valve cover gasket on 'Bertha' I decided to go ahead and clean the carbs..Number 1 carb is running some of the time, backfires and cuts in and out. I have disconnected all cables except one, used a wood lever to pull the carb set out of the manifolds and I am stuck trying to get the 4 pack off the bike...Any thoughts will be appreciated.

If it's the same as an 83 it can be done, but it's really tight. I just had mine off and after popping out of the doughnuts tilt the right side carbs to about 45 deg and start to work out from the left side, the #2 carb tends to get hung up on it's doughnut and I pushed it from the right side till it

cleared. You should be able to unhook the remaining cable at this point,

make sure you set the cable adjusters for max. slack as the cables are

also a bit hard to get to. It's a wrestling match, maybe one of the other

guys has a better description of the removal process.

The right side of the 4 pack gets hung up on the coolant hose. I have tried to get them loose but at this time, no luck. I should have left them alone, but the shop rate here is extremely high so I have to attempt this work myself. I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks again.

I pulled mine out with the main fairings in place. As was said, you have to first ease the cable adjuster right there at the frame on the left side. Then I pulled UP on the top throttle cable to get that cable HOUSING out of the slotted holder on the carb rack and disconnect that cable from the crab rack. Then tilt the rack up on the right side and EASE the rack to the left... this is the way to clear the lower coolant hose. I got it part way out and then was able to get the lower throttle cable off and the choke cable. Then wiggle it and hold your tongue just right and it slips right out.

i must be holding the tongue just right. I don't have any problem at all getting the carbs off. Take off left and right side fairings and the front lowers plus the aircleaner and they slip right out. Now getting that dang breather hose reconnected again when putting them back on is another story......

No I do not pull the fairing off to remove the carbs.Pull the water hose out of the carbs way lift the right side and wiggle the carbs out of the left side.I also reove the cables at the black diamondish shaped box that is over the end of the front valve cover.It makes removing the carbs alot easier. Sorry it took so long to get back to you I am on a new work schedule 3pm to 2 am

That breather hose IS nasty. The 84 I worked on had a simple formed hose... unhooked it from the engine and left it on the air breather case... it came right out and went right back in, still attached to the breather box... Sooo easy. The smaller, front breather hose runs forward and down the frame, in front of and to the left of the engine, simple disconnect at the breather box.

 

My 86 has a "T" connection at the engine... vertically feeding a "shorter" large hose up to the the rear of the breather box and a horizontal section of the "T" feeding a hose over and up to the front connection on the breather box. This makes getting to the lower end of the "main" (rear) breather hose a real BEAR!

 

I have no idea if THIS "T" is stock but it sure makes things tough!

OK!!! I got the 4 pack of carbs. in my hand, thanks to you all. Actually, the coolant hose that runs across the top right of the frame was the problem. Very little slack. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I start the cleaning processbut at least the carbs are off the bike. If you have further suggestions, please let me know...
