I guess I am the keeper of the keys for us. Half the time Ron forgets and leaves the key in the ignition. But We had some keys made at the hardware store.

I keep a key in my jacket, just in case he misplaces it or loses it. I can imagine how you felt until you found it.

Kbay, most of your largeer key and locksmith shops should be able to make you a spare. I know one here in town that carries 2nd gen blanks.

I'm told that the cost of a replacement key from Yamaha is outrageous. There are threads that deal with much cheaper options that you can search for. For example, one thread is "Need a spare key? Ace Hardware has 'em!". Since I am located in Canada (and have a 1st gen VR), I posted the following info in that thread:

"Needed extra keys and went to the standard places here in Ontario (eg. CTC and Home depot) with no luck. Don't think we have Ace hardware places here. Anyway, I went to a lock and key place and for $3.00, they cut keys that work well in my 88VR using a Ilco blanc. In my case, they used a YM51 X75 blank."

I suspect there is an Ilco blank that fits your scoot. Others may know what that blank code might be.

Walmart, home-depot, lowes, and ace were all no-gos here - they did not have the blanks.

I went to a locksmith that advertised that they do automotive stuff and they had it. It cost me a grand total of 4.50. But I had 3 keys made (1.50 each). That guy has my business for any key I need now!

Last time I had a key made at HD or Walmart it ended up costing me 2+ bucks...

Oh yea, the Local Yamaha dealer (that I'm not too fond of anyways) wanted $30 for the blank. Plus a special order fee. (but my local dealer is pretty special that way).

Thanks all, I will give the local ACE a shot tomorrow...it is s`pose to rain big time for the next 2 days so might as well try and get one before I`m left stranded...

Thanks again!!

I had a local locksmith make several spare keys for me. One is hidden on the scoot, another is laced into my riding boots, and the last one is tucked into my wallet.

Boomer......who'll hide the other 2 sooner or later.

That's funny, I picked one up at the local dealer and they just gave it to me. I had it cut at Ace Hardware and he didn't charge me anything since I had my own blank.

:mo money:Whoo-Hoo! I got a bargain! :mo money:

The dealer here only charged me $12 for two keys!!!

I always keep one key in my wallet just in case after doing that frantic search mission many times myself...

If ACE doesn't have the blanks for motorcycles, ask them to check the match with a Toyota key blank they are the same. ( forget the # but it works )

Awesome! Fortunately I have a great honda dealer (that is actually a Yamaha Authorized dealer, so I can get the parts I need through them - and they price somewhere in between MSRP and their cost) Opposed to the yamaha only dealer that is just one giant rip... And then some - obviously.

Wish the Yamaha dealer was good like that though... Oh well.

Local Ace Hardware has them here. The Stealership get about $8.00US for the generic Yammie blanks. They want more than $50.00US for the tear drop shaped Venture blank. When I went to one of the local Ace stores to get a key for my RSV, they were temporarly out of the blanks called for. Not to be out done, the guy there matched up a Honda car blank and cut it. I tried it in the ignition and it would not turn, so he didn't charge me. When I got home I tried it in the saddle bag and trunk. It works great, so I need to go back by and pay for it. It also will work in the ignition if you wiggle it enough.

Another thing I learned, since one of the saddlebags on the RSV has a different lock, the Yammie locks only use one side of the key. SOOOO, I have a key that one side fits the ignition, left bag and trunk and the otherside fits the right bag. I cut a notch in one side of the plastic on the top of the key so I know which way to insert it for each lock. That key stays in my right front pants pocket and the "Honda car" key in my right pocket and there is another one in my wallet.

Kbay...There's just no describing that oh s__t feeling and the relief of finding them, lol.

I got loaded one time and locked the keys in the truck with it blocking the scales...bad.

Got a pool car with no spare...thank you pop-a-lock.

Sat outside for hours waiting till the wife got home, cause I locked myself out with the house, spare inside.

Best yet...I laid a very expensive item on the plastic piece between the hood and the windshield on her car. She drove 16 miles round trip and sat in a parking lot all day in the rain and it still made it home....OMG what a relief.

I broke my only key off in the trunk lock while on the Blueridge parkway. Fortunately my ignition switch would crank with another yama key... but, the gas cap and other locks would not. Found a lock smith in next town that made me several working copies of the old partial key I fished out of the trunk lock. For I think a couple bucks per key. A full service lock smith can probably help you as opposed to buying a blank from Yamaha for around $25.00.

Ohhhh, That would really suck.... I have had thoughts of dropping my gas cap with the key in it and it breaking..what a bad thought!! Well I`m going to try and get a few cut today, one will be laced up on boot and then think I will heat shrink one to the bike some place and have Janet keep one with her as well...

Kreg, there's a locksmith on main street in Tomball, just East of the RR tracks. He made my spare, no problem.

BTW, I keep a spare in my wallet after I bent a key so bad it wouldn't work anymore. A lot of guys hide keys on their bikes.

It's a good thing the trunk doesn't auto lock, huh?
