Seems like I've seen a post on here before about the trunk lid stay being changed but I can't find it now. Has anyone else ever modified the trunk lid to open farther? I don't see why it can't open all the way up to 90 degrees or even so far as to let the backrest lie on the rear seat. What are your thoughts or links?

Your bracket is bent from someone trying to force the lid shut with the arm locked. Just gently push the lid back until it is straight up, this will pull the soft metal bracket back into place against the rear of the trunk.

Any problems show up after doing this?

The only MAJOR problem with doing this is if the wind catches it and tries to open it waaay too much too fast.. it puts a strain on the hinges.. So keep a mindful eye on the winds when you're opening your trunk.. If you have a load on a luggage rack and you open your trunk it too may cause some strain.. I tend to lay my jacket across my rear seat when we stop somewhere which acts as a soft stop to help prevent hyper extension of the trunk lid..

Other than the wind? Have fun!

Thanks for all the tips and no, it isn't bent. I had just rather it open up farther. I knew If it could be done, someone on this site has already done it. I see I'm not the only one that wants a little more room to get, say, a full face helmet in and out. Thanks again folks!

Yes, it IS bent. Unless you have examined a bike with it not bent, then compared it to yours, you generally cannot tell, but that doesn't change the fact that it IS bent.

An RSV with a bracket that is not bent from someone trying to force the lid closed while the strut is locked will allow the lid to open to a straight up position, where it will sit on its own without using the strut lock. You can either fix it like I described in my post above, or you can continue telling yourself it is not bent.

Get a hold of Carbon One. At the 2009 Skid in he show me his trunk latch which he had lengthened so the trunk would open farther. You couldn't tell that the latch wasn't stock. He did a fantastic job. Shoot him an email and he might be willing to lengthen yours.

A few years back a few riders removed the stock opener and replaced them with a gas strut like used in car trunks, hoods, hatchbacks. I saw one and it was a nice mod. I still have the orignal though as its still good.

Mine opens all the way with the rod attached.

Personally, I like the hold open rod - saves the lid closing while you are putting stuff in or taking it out of the trunk.

It is not a complicated component that shouldn't take too many times to remember how to operate. Kind of like walking into a pull to open door - doesn't take many times to remember to pull instead of push. :rotf:

Mine opens 90 degrees straight up, and like goose posted, the bracket does not appear bent, it will look like its made that way, simply open the lid to the straight up position slowly, the bracket will bend back up, and then make sure no one pulls on the lid when its in the locked up position. My wife bent mine a couple of times before she learned to lift the lid up before going down.

I bought my RSV in August of last year and I never thought the trunk opened far enough but didn't worry much about it. Sometime around Feb or March of this year, the bolts vibrated out of the prop mechanism that holds the trunk lid up. The bolts were still in the hinge on the lid and the base of the trunk but the pivot point on the lid prop came apart. It came loose while I was riding so all of the parts were in the trunk. When I was putting the pivot point back together, there was a question in my mind as to which way a certain part on the prop went. I can't remember which part it was but I remember thinking it would seem to work either way but if I assemble it this way, the trunk should open futher than if I assemble it the other way. When I got it put back together, the trunk opened 90 degrees for the first time and it still works as it always did.............locks in the open position until you push it open slightly further and then close. I can't remember exactly what I did but I would bet you could disassemble the pivot point of the locking mechanism and figure out how to assemble it to let the trunk open a little further.

Like I said, this happened to me several months ago and I can't remember exactly what I did but I know for SURE that you can assemble the prop to only let the lid open about 60 degrees and the other way it will open 90 degrees.

STUPID!!!

Well that's how I feel. I bought this bike with 800 miles on it so I didn't know that the lid was suppose to open all the way up. I quess the previous owner DID bend the bracket. Anyway, Goose, you were right! Again!!!!! I gently pushed the lid all the way back up to straight up and it is fine now. Hard headed me wanted to think nothing was bent because it's always been like it was. Anyway, My apologies for doubting your expertise. And to all the others and their advice...., ditto:bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head:

Not a problem my friend. I bought my bike new and thought the same thing about the trunk until I had a chance to look at a bike fresh out of the crate!

That is the beauty of this site - many of us have already been through the routine, and we have learned a lot. No need for a new owner to learn the same things the long way. Just ask (and listen to the responses!). Glad you got it sorted out.
