OldBear Posted October 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2009 Well troops, I've 'bout got the Venture the way I want it now, BUT I want/need one more thing-a good, dead solid, reliable burglar alarm for the bike. For right now it lives in the garage, which has an alarm, and that, coupled with a 1911 Colt gives all the security I need:innocent:, but I really want to take it on some long trips this coming year and leaving my baby sitting outside at a hotel scares the crap outta me ...sooo, who makes the best/most reliable MC alarm? Your experiences and ideas are GREATLY appreciated!
RossKean Posted October 23, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 23, 2009 Park beside a Harley. No accounting for the taste of the criminal element but I suspect a well-farkled Harley is more attractive to the average thief! I wonder how the theft statistics compare? SaltyDog Posted October 23, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 23, 2009 When I looked for a security system for my '83 standard I finally settled on this one from Internatrix (TW-1000) http://www.internatrix.com/. It comes standard with a long range FM paging remote, shock sensor, microwave motion sensor (I mounted mine under the seat) and ignition/starter disable. The price was very competitive and the system installed without incident.

WORKS FANTASTIC. I get plenty of range on the remote so I get alerted in a restaurant or hotel. also autopage is a high end alarm company. Yamaha and Suzuki use them as OEM alarms. hig4s Posted October 23, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 23, 2009 One of the most effective theft deterrents for motorcycles is putting a cover on it. Unlike cars, people put covers on bikes no matter how ratty they are. So crooks, being generally lazy, will often ignore a bike under a cover because they can't see if it is a nice bike or not. On that note I must admit I never cover my bike on a trip I just lock the handle bars, take my stuff inside and hope for the best. I do have a cable lock, but I usually forget to take it with me?? KiteSquid Posted October 23, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 23, 2009 I don't use alarm systems. I use and insurance policy. If the bike gets stolen, it gets replaced. If it gets damaged, it gets repaired.
OldBear Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 24, 2009 I always stick a cover on it when it's parked overnight, and I use a good cable lock, however I'd still like the security that comes from being "called" if some jerk starts messing with my ride while I'm in the hotel. I travel for work a lot and just a few weeks ago down in TX I was at a Hampton Inn. Two guys had parked their bikes right by the door-no covers on 'em. Well lo and behold, when I went downstairs there were these folks gathered around while their houseapes crawled all other these two bikes!! I'm a pretty laid back guy, but this was too much. I confronted 'em and asked if they had permission to fool around with the bikes. They got all huffy and offended that anyone would even "question" what they and their little darlin's would do! I went back inside and asked the clerk to call the guys who owned the bikes and tell 'em that these jerks were messing with their wheels. Well about 30 seconds later two LARGE biker dudes came storming down the stairs... Scattered the jerks like a covey of quail.. Did me a world of good to watch, but did get me thinking..... uechi kid Posted October 24, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 24, 2009 I have a Scorpio alarm on my M95 with all the goodies. I think it's a great alarm but it is expensive. I will be adding on to the Venture this winter.
starkruzen Posted October 24, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 24, 2009 I had the alarm on my Harley before I got my RSTD. Pain in the butt. The alarm wasn't loud enough to scare a flea. I also had the monitor that you carry with you. Never carried it. That's why I have insurance. I guess if your really concerned about your buke being stolen, I would invest in the Lojack..every thing else is, New York Crickets".

Very interesting alarm. A few things struck me as interesting, but I don't know if I understand completely: New Mini siren included with optional input for bike horn - I like the idea of having my air horn go off when someone screws with the bike. THAT will scare the crap out of people and certainly get attention. Is that what this feature means? Built in starter disable - Does this mean that when I walk away, the starter won't work? Separate dedicated siren and horn outputs - Does this mean that the remote will sound the horn? Not that it has ever happened, but I like the idea of being able to find my bike at a rally when there are zillions of other bikes and I forget where mine is. Is this thing a PITA to install? thecount Posted October 25, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 25, 2009 I installed the Scorpion system with the FM pager since I need to park the bike in a public lot at work. Perimeter alarm, ignition kill and notify if sensors activated. I'm happy with it.
painterman67 Posted October 25, 2009 Share #18 Posted October 25, 2009 not sure where I read this but it was a simple install. Get a murcury switch out of an old thermostate and a toggle switch. Wire the toggle switch on a fused line from the battery and hide it where you can reach it but it will not be visible to everyone else. Out of the toggle sitch run the 12volt to the mercury switch and have it set to set off the horns on the bike when it is taken off the side stand. Toggle switch on when armed and of when riding. Simple but efective , especially if you have aftermarket horns. Mine are 139 dcbls on each side of the bike and if you stand it up without flippin g the switch you will leave in a hurry.
