Hummingbird Posted October 20, 2009 #1 Posted October 20, 2009 Just curious - how many has plugged your flat tire on your car or truck ? I've been doing it for years without a failure and decided to plug my Kumho after I found that miniscule needle in it yesterday. It held 55# of pressure overnight so I have no doubt it will run it's life on my Venture. That is unless I manage to find another nail in the same tire.
Monty Posted October 20, 2009 #2 Posted October 20, 2009 I have plugged MANY tires. I keep a plug kit in my truck just in case. As long as it's in the tread area, and not in the sidewall, you should be ok.
SilvrT Posted October 20, 2009 #3 Posted October 20, 2009 Several, including myself, have plugged the motorcycle tire as well.
BoomerCPO Posted October 20, 2009 #4 Posted October 20, 2009 IMHO being able to plug the CT is just another plus for having it on the rear wheel. I have picked up nails in MC tires that had less than 1K on them and had to junk the darn tire. Boomer.....who will be on the Darkside next year for sure.

OK..dumb question(s) (since I've plugged my rear tire and rode several thousand miles on it) .... a) ... why'd ya junk it? ... and b) what is the difference between plugging a car tire (that's on a motorcycle) and a motorcycle tire?
straycatt Posted October 20, 2009 #6 Posted October 20, 2009 My record for plugs in a tire on my truck is five. I've plugged tubeless motorcycle tires that lasted for thousands of miles afterward.
BoomerCPO Posted October 20, 2009 #7 Posted October 20, 2009 OK..dumb question(s) (since I've plugged my rear tire and rode several thousand miles on it) .... a) ... why'd ya junk it? ... and b) what is the difference between plugging a car tire (that's on a motorcycle) and a motorcycle tire? Probably no difference. I just have a deep distrust in a MC tire that has a plug in it....had a few bad experiences that left more than one scar on the old bod. Boomer.....who has enough scars and bad memories from booze and wild wimmen.
jlh3rd Posted October 20, 2009 #8 Posted October 20, 2009 i've plugged lots of car tires......haven't plugged a cycle tire yet.....but i will....and i'll probably run it till it's time to replace it but i wouldn't blame anybody if they throw away a good plugged motorcycle tire......a blowout on a car isn't the same as a blowout on a bike........

Boomer.....who has enough scars and bad memories from booze and wild wimmen. OK then, if there is "probably no difference" .... how is it that you'd trust a plug in a car tire (on a motorcycle) and not a motorcycle tire?? Seems a little contradictory to me. (not razzin ya...just curious to know if there's a real difference)

Seems a little contradictory to me. (not razzin ya...just curious to know if there's a real difference) I see what you're saying.....I have never had a plug come out of CT yet.....whereas that has happened to me 3x's with MC tires.....and THAT is the difference for me. Boomer......who knows that new underwear is not cheap either.
BuddyRich Posted October 20, 2009 #11 Posted October 20, 2009 I had to plug a couple of MC tire when they were relatively new. Wore them out after. Never had a problem. I am more concerned about plugging a car tire in the inch closest to the sidewall. I have thrown/swallowed a couple of those. That's a problem with all radials.
Hummingbird Posted October 21, 2009 Author #12 Posted October 21, 2009 The plug that I did was in the tread at the first series - I think I would be MOST hesitant about plugging a sidewall. I've never done that and not sure I would in the future unless it was just a patch to get me home.

footsie Posted October 21, 2009 #14 Posted October 21, 2009 If you are concerned about a plug in a motorcycle tire, have it patched on the inside with a cord patch, I have patched and plug, a rema plug or cord patch will not come loose when properly installed. To prove it to yourself, plug one with a corded plug, not a rubber plug, then run it couple hundred miles, pull it off and try to pull the plug out, you will take part of the tire with the plug. gregg
hunter 1500 Posted October 21, 2009 #15 Posted October 21, 2009 Quite a few years ago I had just put a new tire on my bike and picked up a nail. Put a plug on the tire and ran it until it was as worn as any tire. As long as it is plugged right you shouldn't have a problem with it.
Motorcycle Mike Posted October 21, 2009 #16 Posted October 21, 2009 I have plugged quite a few motorcycle tires as well as car/truck tires. I always use corded plugs and run them till the tire is worn out. Never had one fail.

Never had one fail. I've been planning to get a plug kit this Winter but did not know there were different kinds of plugs. Can someone recommend a kit with the correct type of plug? Thanks
Motorcycle Mike Posted October 21, 2009 #19 Posted October 21, 2009 The corded plugs look like small pieces of rope coated with glue.
dynodon Posted October 21, 2009 #20 Posted October 21, 2009 Never had the occasion to plug a MC tire, but I had a racing tire on my '89 SHO at an autocross one time, got a nail and someone there had a corded plug kit, and plugged the tire (in the tread, typical roofing type nail size.) I intended to replace the tire, but since it was on the back I forgot about it. The tire was plugged in 1996. Was a BFG R1 DOT legal race tire. I used that tire, rotated all over the car front to back, side to side, and never thought about the plug again. I used it at autocrosses up to 60 mph, but more to the point, at road courses for driver eduction/track day events at speeds up to 120 mph! Those tires never did wear out, I finally replaced them just because of age in 2007, that is right, 11+ years old! Plug was still in the one tire, and it never lost any more air than any of the other tires. YMMV as they say.

RedRider Posted October 21, 2009 #22 Posted October 21, 2009 As for plug kits, I have two. The one I have used is from Wally World. It consists of a reamer, a plug inserter, and a pack of stick strings. I am running on a plug in my Suburban right now. It works great. I carry this on my KLR. The other kit is a Stop and Go kit. It is basically the same thing but also includes a CO2 inflater. Since I now carry a small compressor on trips, I have never had to use the CO2 inflater (nor have I ever plugged a MC tire). If my tires go flat it's because I wore them out. This is the one I carry on my Venture. Now that I think about it, I probably ought to switch the kits between the bikes since the only the Venture is wired for the compressor. RR
Motorcycle Mike Posted October 21, 2009 #23 Posted October 21, 2009 I carry a Slime pump along with a plug kit with me. http://www.gadgetjq.com/slime_pump.htm The pump doesnt take up much space in the bag. It can be bought at most auto part stores, Walmart etc.
dksmith196958 Posted October 22, 2009 #24 Posted October 22, 2009 i dont know what kind of plug you are using but ive used TECH plugs for years and never had one pull out they are self vulcinizing and become part of the tire
jfoster Posted October 22, 2009 #25 Posted October 22, 2009 The main problem that I've been told concerning plugs is that they may work themselves out rapidly deflating the tire. As for me, I've never experienced this. I've run tires with plugs in them at high speeds with no problem (car tires). Not saying that it won't happen. I personally don't trust a patch and would take a plug over a patch any day.
