Aluminum or Steel Rivets??

I need to put 2 new rivets in one of my bub mufflers to hold the chrome tip on.

I was told not to use aluminum however, if I use steel, they will rust. I haven't seen any stainless steel rivets. Has anyone had trouble with using aluminum?

Like I said, I don't want them to rust. Not attractive.

just my thought ... the ends of the mufflers don't get hot enuf to cause an issue with the aluminum ones.

I would recommend stainless. I doubt aluminum would hold up.

I have the aluminum ones holding a deflector lid on the top of my propane heater and I can tell you, that lid gets WAY HOTTER than mufflers will ... no problems so far. But, just my "opinion" . If it was me, I'd go with the alum ones and see what happens... they're easy enuf to replace.

hi greg the aluminum will work just fine. thats what i used on my bubs. i belive i got a rivet kit from harbor freight, came with diferent size rivits and a install tool.

Aluminum rivets don't last on the pipes due to the vibration. They work loose and finally fail. Use the stainless rivet, you won't lose the tip.

Just a thought... but I'm using a screw and nylock nut to hold my Bub tips on... never been a problem. And the nylock nut is in the exhaust stream.

Drill, tap and 1/4" stainless steel button head screws. Never have to drill rivets out again.

Button head bolts would be good too.

WOW! Thanks everyone. I really like the idea of tapping it and using a stainless screw.
