rjg1985 Posted October 8, 2009 #1 Posted October 8, 2009 I have a bad #2 cylinder on my 85 and can not find new pistons and rings. Will Vmax pistons and rings work in the venture motor? Vmax pistons and rings are still available from Yamaha but not the ones for the Venture. I have not asked this question at the local dealer I figured I could get a better answer here.

I would think so, but Squeeze is the final authority on this one. You can find used pistons listed on Ebay from time to time and they go cheap as they never sell.
Squeeze Posted October 8, 2009 #3 Posted October 8, 2009 Since your '85 should be a 1200 cc Engine, i can't think why Vmax Rings won't fit to Venture Pistons. After all, these are the same. If you need to bore the Cylinder to the next bigger Size, using a new oversized Vmax Piston with Vmax Rings would be my Way to go. Of Course checking the Weights of each complete Piston/Ring/Con Rod Assembly and equal them is the way to better Performance and a smoother running Engine. But if you'd ask me, I'd look after an other good running Motor and fit this, might be the cheapest Way and save a Lot of Hassles and Time too.
rjg1985 Posted October 8, 2009 Author #4 Posted October 8, 2009 Thanks for the reply. I thought about an engine swap, but I would still have a used engine. I can can get a 1300 localy for $500.00. If I could rebuild my 1200 for under $700.00 I would be happy and know I have a new engine. I don't have a problem with second gear yet but I could do that upgrade right away. The bike runs good the way it is but it could be better. I really like this thing. Even with the weak cylinder my nephew can't keep up to me with his Harley.
Squeeze Posted October 8, 2009 #5 Posted October 8, 2009 700 ? Hmmmmm Depends on how much "Quality" you want to achieve. Boring one Size bigger, new Sleeve, new Piston, Rings, Bearing sounds like some Money to begin with. Gaskets, Seals, O-Rings plus Things "you better do that while you're there" like fixing the 2nd Gear/undercut the Trans ... I don't know how much is the Labor in your Area, but here in Germany, you can't get that done with 700 Bucks, or even 700 Euros if you disregard the Currency Exchange Rate. I'd go with the 1300 for 400 Bucks and update/overhaul this Engine for another 300 and have a Lot Peace of Mind, of Course, you need to be halfway sure about the Heritage of the Engine.
rjg1985 Posted October 8, 2009 Author #6 Posted October 8, 2009 Ya, after doing some math myself I found that $700.00 is way low. I need to get a machining quote and then get a parts list together and get all that priced out and see where I'm at.
friesman Posted October 9, 2009 #7 Posted October 9, 2009 Rocket redid my 85 last winter after the main output shaft went. The things you should do when it is out of the bike REALLY add up. I think I remember solid motor mounts (spongy rubber), water pump (cracked impeller) , stainless brake lines, new spark plug wires, replace thrust washer to harder to make sure 2nd gear never goes, and several other things that just needed replacing. My view is that you would definitley be cheaper replacing the engine with a known good 1300, plus it would be easier. I would still recommend replacing the motormounts with the metal ones, it really stiffens up the bikes frame and handling. Brian:mo money:
rjg1985 Posted October 9, 2009 Author #8 Posted October 9, 2009 I have aluminum motor mounts ready to install. I did some research last night and it would be closer to $1200.00-$1300.00 to rebuild. A good used motor is looking better. The only other thing besides the motor would be the brake lines. The motor in the bike now has the high output stator, but the used motor I looked at doesn't come with one anyway.

Squeeze Posted October 9, 2009 #10 Posted October 9, 2009 I'd contact Dano and do the Starter Clutch Upgrade while I'm at it.
rjg1985 Posted October 9, 2009 Author #11 Posted October 9, 2009 Would I be able to use my carbs and TCI with a newer 1300?
Squeeze Posted October 9, 2009 #12 Posted October 9, 2009 Depends on the Year of the 1300 Motor. Until 1990 it's the same as you got, above that, it's a single Coil Pickup. But since you're already working on the Stator Exchange, it's only two more Bolts to mount your existing Pickup Coils. or you mount your complete Stator Cover. IF you need to interchange the Pick Up Coil. Carbs are nearly the same, only minor Differences between the Jets, these could be adapted easily.
