rod Posted October 5, 2009 #1 Posted October 5, 2009 We went on a night ride last night and on the way home I developed a problem. The speedometer went erratic and the engine started missing badly. The speedometer quit working and the bike ran normal. Intermittently the speedometer would come on erratic and the miss would return then go off and run fine. Made it home but don't know where to start. Any one have this problem? I am thinking ignition switch or coil. Thanks Rod
mike_kelly_68 Posted October 6, 2009 #2 Posted October 6, 2009 Rod, Sounds like the ignition switch to me. Having multiple electrical problems that would be the logical place to start and I have seen a few times on the site where people have had odd troubles caused by a faulty key switch. Anyhow if I am confused I got it back to the top of the list so one of the gurus might see it.
BuddyRich Posted October 6, 2009 #3 Posted October 6, 2009 I'd hotwire it and see if the problem is solved.
rod Posted October 7, 2009 Author #4 Posted October 7, 2009 The ignition switch is OK. The speedo does not work and when the needle jumps the radio gets louder??? I guess I will start at the coils. Any one have a clue what is the most likely cause would be? Rod
gscbertrand Posted October 7, 2009 #5 Posted October 7, 2009 I would check the grounds as well, because they will fault all the rest of the systems.

And you may want to do a voltage test at the battery to verify the charging system is okay. When my rectifier went out all sorts of crazy electrical stuff started happening. Just some more thoughts Good luck!
BuddyRich Posted October 7, 2009 #7 Posted October 7, 2009 Isn't that the speedo is now a VU Meter feature... I would start under the fairing and unplug everything and plug it back in to clean any connectors. Also put a volt meter on it and see if its fluctuating. Double check all grounds.Theres a ground on the fairing frame by the cassette player. Check it also.
