Ive develpoed a gas leak. Noticed it today when I was under the bike listening to the collector rattle anf trying to decide what to do with that. The collector can wait. What I discovered was a gas leak at first what looked like it was fluid leaking from the rear shock. Pulled off the right side abs cover and can see the fuel leaking from somewhere above the rear shock and then running down the shock. Cant see where it is coming from though. It only leaks when the motor is running. Not sure if it leaks when the key is on but the engine is not running I will go check and edit the post as soon as I can. Anmy idea where to start or what will be the easiest way to get in there and see .

Hopefully I can do this myself as it will have to sit if it needs to go to the shop. mONEY IS TIGHT WRIGHT NOW.

aNY IDES WILL BE WELCOMED AND FOLLOWED UP.

If it's only "leaking" with the engine running, then what is probably happening is you've got a float sticking open and the excess is running thru the overflow hose and exiting up behind the rear shock. That is the only place these 4 overflow hoses dump out. If it was the tank or a fitting, it would leak all the time. Try tapping on the bowls with a screwdriver while the bike is running, might dislodge the offending matter.

thats kinda what I was thinking. Guess now for the stupid or ignorant question you name it. I just went out there and for fear of tapping on something that shouldnt be tapped on, where are the bowls located on these carbs. I,m not a mechanic so I 'm not sure if I can handle a carb rebuild.

Hey David,

Here is how you can tell if it is a stuck float, or something else(which I think it is.)

Each Carb. has a black rubber hose coming out of the bottom of it. Back by the rear shock is going to be a gang of four black rubber hoses. If you have a stuck float, and the bike is running, fuel should be coming out of one (or more) of the black hoses.

Now, here is what I think is going on. The fuel pump is on the left side of the bike as you sit on it. A fuel line comes from the fuel tank and goes to the fuel pump. Then a fuel line runs up by the rear shock and over to the carbs. This fuel line is a red braided line and is about the size of your middle finger. I have seen this line rub against the frame or the rear shock and spring a leak. The reason that it only leaks when the bike is running is because the fuel pump pressurizes the line and the fuel squirts out. when the engine is off, (as well as the fuel pump) the fuel leaks out until it reaches the place in the red fuel line where the hole is and stops. I have attached 2 pics, In the first pic (FUEL LINES 1) The yellow arrow is pointing to the red fuel line going to the Carbs. (the one I think is leaking) the red arrow is pointing to the fuel line that comes from the fuel tank thru the fuel filter. In the second pic (FUEL LINES 2) again the yellow arrow is pointing to the red fuel line going to the Carbs., the red arrow is pointing to the fuel line coming from the fuel tank and the white arrow is pointing to the rear shock.

So, the first thing to do is find the 4 black rubber drain hoses and start the bike and see if one of them has fuel coming out of it. If none do, trace the red fuel line and with your hand find the place where the fuel is leaking out.

Good luck, and if you have questions, PM me.

I was thinking it was a fuel line leak also so I turned the key onand let the fuel pump pressurize the system. Left it on for about 10-20 minutes without cranking the bike with no fuel leak and the fuel pump never had to kick back on. Cranked the bike and within a few seconds the fuel started leaking just above the rear shock directly under the four rubber lines. I cant get my hands into the lines to pull them up to see if one of these lines is the colprite or not. Will try again fri. as I'mm going out of town in the morning and want be back till thurs. night.

not sure if this is in my league or not,

many thanks to all. Especially skydoc17 and mbbrood. Without the pms and pics I might not have figured it out. Turns out it was a stuck float or at least I am assuming it was. I open the bowl screws one at a time and turned on the key to let the fuel pump work . The rear right (as you sit on the bike) carb took saveral times of opening up as the first time I rook out the screw nothing came out. I used a paper clip opened up and a lot of junk came out. The thing would acyually hold pressure with the screw out. Guess its time for a tear down and cleaning.

On the other hand it runs and starts much better now. Thanks again to all who helped on your end.
