diggerc Posted October 2, 2009 #1 Posted October 2, 2009 I have noticed a funny rattleing sound ,that I think may be coming from the exhaust.I have been told that these bikes have a problem with the collector box! Is this true and is there a fix? Thanks Stan
StuD Posted October 2, 2009 #2 Posted October 2, 2009 The baffels in your collector box have come loose causing the rattle. I heard of a Quick fix "other then taking it apart & rebuilding it" & that is to lay the bike on its side (on soft ground) take a 10 # sledge hammer & give the middle of the collecter box a gentel but firm SMACK.............:canada:.
Skid Posted October 2, 2009 #3 Posted October 2, 2009 Yes, that is common, but remember you are dealing woth a 25+ year old scoot. Mine started that a while back, but then stopped on its own. Sometimes the baffle will burn off and lodge elsewhere inside the box...
painterman67 Posted October 2, 2009 #4 Posted October 2, 2009 you can also take off the mufflers and reach up into the collector with a long pair of needle nose pliers and twist out the perferated baffles. David
Sandbagger Posted October 2, 2009 #5 Posted October 2, 2009 Hi There, I have been through collector box hell. The inside of these things has a metal baffle that becomes loose over time. I needed to take mine off and took it to a muffler shop. The guy pulled the guts out and welded it back shut. The baffles don't do anything I believe. The bang on the bottom of the collector would be a little risky and not particularly effective from what I saw. The baffle was disconnected in multiple spots. If not now they will be soon. The weak point on my collector was the exhaust connectors. I would be careful about banging on it because if you break a neck on the exhaust connector you have a $400 replacement problem.
Ivan Posted October 2, 2009 #6 Posted October 2, 2009 Instead of laying it over and hitting it with a sledge, why not use a floor jack and a block of appropriately sized wood to gently bend the casing? Not trying to be a smart azz, I am really asking, since I haven't had to battle this before.
diggerc Posted October 2, 2009 Author #7 Posted October 2, 2009 Thank you all for your help ,this winter I will jack up the bike and see what;s up with it. Stan
barend Posted October 2, 2009 #8 Posted October 2, 2009 Thank you all for your help ,this winter I will jack up the bike and see what;s up with it. Stan Wouldn't worry about it, as mentioned you can try pulling the baffle out (tried that, no luck), or let it rattle for a while, eventually it'll lodge somewhere and shut up. Unless you plan on cutting it open and re-welding it and soon before the baffleplate gets rattled to bits, I'd leave it alone since pulling the exhaust it a royal pain. My
Venturous Randy Posted October 2, 2009 #9 Posted October 2, 2009 My concern on the baffle lodging somewhere is it blocking off the flow of exhaust. RandyA
