Freebird Posted September 28, 2009 #1 Posted September 28, 2009 OK...it's not a serious problem and not even one that I'm going to spend a lot of time trying to track down. I am almost sure though that my cruise once worked in 4th and 5th gear. For a long time now though, it only works in 5th gear. I would seldom have a need to use it in 4th gear anyway but am curious as to whether or not I am just wrong in thinking that it used to work in 4th or if something is wrong. I briefly looked at the service manual yesterday and didn't immediately recognize where it gets the signal for what gear you are in. I'm thinking that maybe it comes from the TCI and if so, maybe it stopped working when I installed the Dyna3000. I could put the old TCI back on and test it but don't know that it's important enough for me to go to the trouble.
mikentinamidnight Posted September 28, 2009 #2 Posted September 28, 2009 yes don it is supposed to work in 4th gear also. i have been trying to figure out why mine dosent work in 4th either. the dealer has no idea and i cant figure it out either. every now and then while accelerating through 4th my resume light will come on for a second but it never stays on. if you figure it out will you please post it because i am at a loss. if i find out what it is ill post it on here. thanks. mike
Freebird Posted September 28, 2009 Author #3 Posted September 28, 2009 So...I don't suppose you have the Dyna 3000 on yours do you?
Cougar Posted September 28, 2009 #4 Posted September 28, 2009 Just wondering if any of you have removed the cable going into the hub and inspecting the smooth side of the sensor? that part sometimes gets real messed up for some reason from time to time. I have a spare now that I keep on hand as well. very cheap at pinwall. Just a thought boys. Jeff
BuddyRich Posted September 28, 2009 #5 Posted September 28, 2009 (edited) I think there's a sensor on the gear selector. Mine works in 4th or 5th and not third. Doesn't care about speed as long as your above 35. Just as soon as I switch to 4th the light comes on to engage/Set.Even if I'm only doing 35 in 4th.If I go back down to 3rd it goes off just as I shift it down. Edited September 29, 2009 by BuddyRich
mikentinamidnight Posted September 29, 2009 #7 Posted September 29, 2009 no don mine is stock. jeff what hub is it you are referring to?
Cougar Posted September 29, 2009 #8 Posted September 29, 2009 were the sensor goes/bolts into the hub/drive shaft part of the bike. Un-bolt it take it out and take a looksy at it. in some case's I have heard or seen them kinda messed up for some reason. it should be nice and smooth.

I'm going out in left with this one, waaaay out in left field but I believe the Ignition Module "mayhaps" have something to do with it? All summer long, my cruise would kick off if I hit a bump or heavy gust of wind, it wouldn't roll on properly but once it got the speed right, it would stay on until the bump or wind.. I have since replaced my ignition module with a Dyna3000 module and now my cruise control is rock solid, 4th and 5th.. the higher the revs the more it is able to maintain its speed. Now whether or not the ignition module actually has anything to do with the cruise, I don't know.. but this is what happened to mine.. Go figure..
Freebird Posted September 29, 2009 Author #11 Posted September 29, 2009 I am familiar with the speed sensor and have had mine out a couple of times when I lube the rear. I don't see how it could be the culprit though. It only has one sensor and senses speed, not which gear you are in. My cruise is rock solid in 5th but just won't engage in 4th. I would think that if it were the speed sensor, it would affect both gears.
Cougar Posted September 29, 2009 #12 Posted September 29, 2009 Yeah, that would make since Don. DUH! well keep us informed on what you find.
