footsie Posted September 28, 2009 #1 Posted September 28, 2009 Well we did the Iron Butt in Newnan Ga, Saturday, got to meet Ted but missed him the next morning at the start, We did not get to the starting point until 0530. Guess he had went on. Well anyway it was a wet ride, through the mountains in NC we got soaked. Had some electrical problem with My RSV, starter silenoid. but got through the ride. Made it back the start point about 0300 Sunday morning. Yep took us 21 hours, but we stopped and ate in Nashville TN. The weather cleared just as we went through knoxville and was Good from there back to Newnan. I told the guys that put it on " I think I have a candy a-- instead of a Iron butt" The pillow top is ok, but it sucks after about 600 miles. Gregg
Bugsplat Posted September 28, 2009 #3 Posted September 28, 2009 Congrats on your successful completion of the out of state SS1000 ! We rode the in state ss1000 out of Newnan, Ga and did not arrive back until 3:28AM. We hit the rain about 70 miles south of Savannah and that changed the whole ride. I wish someone made a rainsuit that actually works. By the time we reached our next mandatory stop I had more water inside the jacket than on the outside! The ride through the mountaions from Clayton to Dalton on Hwy. 76 in the dark, fog and rain was not enjoyable. You could cut the fog with a knife. In reteospect I think it would have been better to run the route in reverse where the mountain portion of the ride would have been in the daylight hours so the views could have been enjoyable. Mark C. and his crew of the MTF group need a big 'At A Boy' for another great job of planning and handling of this IBA ride event.
footsie Posted September 28, 2009 Author #4 Posted September 28, 2009 When we went over mount eagle, at midnight my windshield kept fogging up, I could not see, took forever to get through there. congrads on your run too. We were thinking maybe we could get one planned to run through the flatlands of fla. Gregg
Wanderer Posted September 28, 2009 #5 Posted September 28, 2009 A BIG well done to all. My rain gear was not water repellent and after a while I was soaked through and through and cold to the bone. Made for a miserable ride. Got back to Newnan about 12:30. Sorry Greg, I got there early and was at front of line, met CrazyFrog and his wife and rode with them. They were alone and I new there were four in your party. We picked up an asian fellow name Tony at the first gas stop and the 3 bikes stayed together the rest of the way. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SsCvDvX5G2I/AAAAAAAAA28/_NHzUWsRpJ4/CleanGlass.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SsCvDhJgBrI/AAAAAAAAA3E/PKwRNCmroPk/kirby.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SsCvD5W0GWI/AAAAAAAAA3I/hr5CWZVrH-4/tony.jpg These photos are from the MTF forum site. I even got one of you Footsie. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_xOOWRVc9-a4/SsCvvfTeGOI/AAAAAAAAA3M/NNBedC5cqPg/s720/dsc_0094.jpg
Dave77459 Posted September 28, 2009 #6 Posted September 28, 2009 Congratulations! I did a solo ride a couple weeks back and felt I did poorly to take 19 hours when they say "most people" do it in 18. Do you feel like having more people slowed you down? As far as rain gear, I rode home from the Grand Canyon in more rain than sun. My el-cheapo Frogg Toggs kept me bone dry behind my RSTD windscreen. My buddy on the K1200GS got soaked in his expensive gear, including rain boots. We think it was about 1000 miles of rain out of 1500 miles total. Again, CONGRATS!

No, the xtra riders did not slow me down. CrazyFrog is really crazy and we should change his name to "LikeABatOuttaHell", to say the least he likes speed. What surprised me though was Tony on the single lung BMW hanging with us the whole way. Mental Note to Self: Get some FroggToggs!
footsie Posted September 30, 2009 Author #9 Posted September 30, 2009 Yea frog toggs were keeping me dry, but at the third stop david changed to warmer gear and I put on his rain suit, hit that bad rain and got soaked, will leave my frog toggs on from now on. Gregg
Brake Pad Posted September 30, 2009 #10 Posted September 30, 2009 getting ready to do mine. but I'm going alone. itching to get this over with:Venture:
Wanderer Posted September 30, 2009 #11 Posted September 30, 2009 getting ready to do mine. but I'm going alone. itching to get this over with:Venture: If our weather hadn't been plum miserable I truly would have enjoyed the ride. Good luck on yours.
Sleeperhawk Posted September 30, 2009 #12 Posted September 30, 2009 If our weather hadn't been plum miserable I truly would have enjoyed the ride. Good luck on yours. I thought you never got rained on? :stirthepot:
Donnie1 Posted October 1, 2009 #13 Posted October 1, 2009 Congrats. I'm hoping to give it a try next spring. So if anyone around the Central Missouri area would like to ride along, let me know.
Wanderer Posted October 1, 2009 #14 Posted October 1, 2009 I thought you never got rained on? :stirthepot: I didn't say anything about rain. I said weather. I just happened to ride through some very big cloud cover.
Kirby Posted October 15, 2009 #15 Posted October 15, 2009 Hey Ted, What kind of rainsuit did you have on? It must have been invisible!! Yor arse was about frozen a time or two. Can I help it if you guys didn't want to ride fast?? You should have said something. I was ready to get back and out of the rain. Tony did say once that he was having to push it to keep up. But he also said it kept him from getting tired and sleepy. Anyway, I really enjoyed the ride, rain and all. Met two good friends.
Wanderer Posted October 15, 2009 #16 Posted October 15, 2009 It's all good. You can't ever have too many friends. I like speed, but the little romp through the cloud of rain in the mountains had me a little nervous, but hey, I had your tail lights in sight. Of course if you'd have gone over the side I'd have been right behind you.
footsie Posted December 18, 2009 Author #17 Posted December 18, 2009 My iron butt pins and goodies came today. I was about to think they were not coming. Gregg
Bob Myers Posted December 18, 2009 #18 Posted December 18, 2009 My iron butt pins and goodies came today. I was about to think they were not coming. Gregg You got yours pretty fast. Must have had class "A" documentation. Last year mine took from August to end of December to come. Fellow that rode with me didn't even submit his until January, got his at the end of March. Must be the Fall rush?
Dave77459 Posted December 18, 2009 #19 Posted December 18, 2009 My iron butt pins and goodies came today. I was about to think they were not coming. Gregg I submitted my documentation a couple weeks before you and haven't heard squat. They haven't cashed my check, so it isn't pending either. Maybe since you did an organized ride, they bought your documentation cheaper? Anyways, congrats! That's a great early Christmas present. Dave
Bob Myers Posted December 18, 2009 #20 Posted December 18, 2009 I just got an email from Michael Kneebone concerning this IBA speed and such. Here is a copy/paste of what he sent me; Bob, Do you know what his (Gregg - no last name but if it is Mathis then yes, MTF ride - see below) ride is? We do them in order, but yes, there are some groups that meet our documentation requirements up-front (MTF comes to mind as number 1) that do get through quicker because we have a lot less work on those (and have a small group that audits nothing but group rides). If you could let the board know that is an advantage of an MTF ride, IBA members are on hand to do a review of the ride so it saves countless hours later on. Thanks! I surmise this so say the group rides, and MTF(Motorcycle Tourer Forum) are given priority and every thing else is taken in the order it was received. With Greg doing a group he had preferential treatment over Dave. At least that is my take on this.
footsie Posted December 18, 2009 Author #21 Posted December 18, 2009 The guys that orginized the ride made sure all of our documentation was complete and in order. Then they sent it in for us. Did not mean to open a can of worms. Gregg
Bob Myers Posted December 18, 2009 #22 Posted December 18, 2009 Did not mean to open a can of worms. Gregg I don't think you opened a can of worms here, quite the contrary! I was blown away that Michael Kneebone would jump on the explanation so fast, even more impressed he sent it to me and ask I share it with the folks on this board. My opinion of him went up several notches for sure with that. I know a couple guys who have met him and they say nothing but how great and fair this guy is in his IBA dealings. I don't think I have ever been a part of a discussion where the entity or the leader themself though that a personal reply was warranted. Major, major Kudos to Michael. Now then, Dave hang in there I know you'll get your turn.

Now then, Dave hang in there I know you'll get your turn. First of all, I didn't need an explanation. IBA is staffed by volunteers, and I have done enough volunteering to understand what that means. I think it was a very stand up thing for Mr. Kneebone to offer an explanation, and I understand it completely. If I could pick the "low hanging fruit", I would. It just makes sense. I'm not worried or anything, I am happy for Gregg. Dave
Kirby Posted December 18, 2009 #24 Posted December 18, 2009 Hey ya'll I got my stuff in the mail yesterday as well. Can't wait to do it again!! I saw Gregg's and Ted's name on the list as well. Haven't checked the website as of yet though. Congrats to all and Merry Christmas!!
Bob Myers Posted December 19, 2009 #25 Posted December 19, 2009 Well there you go, if he saw it on the list then it likely is in the mail!
