Black Buildup in muffler

I have notice that my right muffler has a carbon buildup (black sut)at the end of the muffler, any ideas of what is going on? The left is clean.

With out looking at it, by your description, it sounds like one or both of the carb's for the right bank are running rich, or a possibility of a right carb float may be sticking.

 

I would run a can of sea foam through the tank then run a full tank of fuel through it and then check it to see if it clears up. The sea foam will break lose the gunk in the carb's that may be the cause of a float sticking. It surely cant hurt it.

Both my pipes have black carbon on the exhaust. Dealer told me it was because it was running to lean? Seems to me it is running to rich. How to solve the problem?

you need to put a whole can of techron additive to a full tank of gas, take it out and run it hard as you can for the whole tank, keeping the rpms up high. it should clean out all the carbon gunked up in it, and then change your oil afterwards and you will problly see a lot of carbon in the oil. even the road stars are having carboning up problems also, as a friend of mine works at a yamaha dealer and said they are seeing a lot of bikes coming in with lot of carbon buildup and don't know what to do about it.

I have done that and it is still black, even running interstate at hwy speeds for hours they are still black. Carbs are in sync. They have been that way since I bought it new. I get about 45mpg on interstate.

I have the exact same problem. I have a super dealer here in Tulsa (K&N Yamaha). They are excellent people. I had mine in for a check over and had the carbs synced and EGR done. The bike wasn't out of adjustment by much. I asked them about the difference and they said they didn't pay much attention to the carbon build up on mufflers. I know my carbs are in sync and the carbs mixture is correct via the EGR test. I'm not going to worry about it but it is weird.

My right exhaust is blacker than the left. The carbs are synced. I believe it may be the float levels. If it ever quits raining here I am taking it to the dealer, and do some DESKJUMPINGON.....
