The dreaded "tick"

I'm just shy of 3k on my new "08" RSV, did my oil change at 600. Twice now I've had lifter "tick" for a few moments upon cold start. Our temps here have been unseasonably warm, upper 80's and 90's, I ran 20/50 but am about to dump it and go to either 15/40 or 10/30 for the remainder of the riding season. Like I said, it's only occurred a couple times and quiets down in a few seconds. Concerns?

Not a concern with mine. It and others ive heard have a ticking sound when first started then goes away. Had it at a Yamaha dealer once and they said not a concern..for what thats worth.

That's just the seasonal clock accessory that ticks when it is time take it into the dealer to have them change to a lighter grade of oil. I understand only the better dealers install this option as an added bonus for dealing with them.

It's probably just a cold valve ticking, mine does the same thing. I wonder if the guys using Motorkote have seen a decrease in the ticking noise? I 've heard other brands and model of bikes that do it as well. Not a big deal.

Try the MotorKote it should quiet down most engine noise. Those of us using the product are pretty happy with it. Currently looks like 80 - 90% of those trying the product have reported success.

not to get off subject, but IMHO, 20/50 is a little too heavy for this bike. Even in summer weather. But I do run 20w50 in my air cooled VStar.

I have been running Rotella Syn (5w40) and rarely notice a tick at all.

I guess my concern is a weak lifter or one not pumping up immediately. My past experience with small block Chevy's caused a caution light to come on, I just don't want a "flat" cam spot or worn rocker so soon in the game. I know it'll bug me!

These engines do not have hydraulic lifters so this is not an issue. We also don't have rocker arms. The cam sits on top of the valve and has a disc the cam rides on. It would be interesting to see if you have a shim that has too much clearance.

are you sure it's a valve that's ticking... it could be the cam chain adjuster. From what I understand of it, it works on a hydraulic "valve". Mine has been doing this since I got it with 1300 km on it. Even adding Motorkote doesn't change that although the ticking seems to go away quicker now.

Generally speaking... You would only go to a lower grade oil as the temperatures get lower. Not the other way around. For example... use a 10W/40 during the summer months and a 5W/30 during the winter years.

Renne, I have the same ticking on my 08 w/12k on it. Hope it's not an issue.
