Motorcycle Mike Posted September 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2009 I own a Honda VTX1300 also. Using the choke (really a fuel enricher) fouls plugs rapidly and therefor needs to be used spairingly. I'm curiois about the proper use of the choke on the RSV. It seems to need the choke at first start up when cold but I dont want to foul plugs.
Freebird Posted September 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2009 Fowled plugs has never been a problem on my RSV. In more than 10 years that I've owned it, I've never fowled a plug. I use the choke when needed.
KiteSquid Posted September 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2009 I accidentally drove about 40 miles with my enricher on at highway speeds with no discernible effect.
SilvrT Posted September 22, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 22, 2009 When the bike is cold, I pull the choke out about half way ... start the bike, wait about 30 seconds and then push it in to the point that the rpm's drop to just above idle (appx 1000-1200 rpm) ... then I let it warm up for maybe 2 or 3 min, then I push the choke off. Sideoftheroad Posted September 23, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 23, 2009 2 different bikes. I wish I could have kept my X when I bought the RSV. I had V&H pipes and a Pro-R Hypercharger. Not a cold weather bike w/ that combination. I had to use the choke more often than what I should have. Not sure if you are on the VTXOA forum, but I replaced the pilot jet w/ one of Hicks and it ran much better.
Motorcycle Mike Posted September 23, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted September 23, 2009 Yea, I've been a member of the VTXOA since 2004. My VTX runs great and I have never personaly had a plug flowling problem. It is a known issue with the bike though. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't an issue with the RSV before I found out the hard way. Thanks for the in put.
RossKean Posted September 23, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 23, 2009 First start of the day (temperature below 75 F or so)... Choke out, start, drive off, close choke within 30 seconds. On a warm day, I rarely have to choke on subsequent restarts unless the bike has been parked for 5-6 hours. Choking is usually necessary below 60 F if the bike has been parked more than 2-3 hours.
