yankeereb Posted September 21, 2009 #1 Posted September 21, 2009 A while ago I posted that I was frustrated with my dealer about fixing my bike. Two months later I get it back. To make a long story short. The problem was that the bike would start as soon as you turned the key on. I did not have to touch the start button. The replaced the starter relay, solenoid, and handle bar switch still had the problem. They decided to trace the wires to check for bad wiring. The mechanic spent 25 hours and found an 18 inch section of the wiring harness was bad. The replaced the complete wiring harness. Still had the problem. They called in a Yamaha tech who spent one day on the bike. He was puzzled never saw this problem before. They replaced the entire wiring harness in the fairing but still did not fix the problem. After several techs and non techs traced more wiring they found the problem to be in the radio amp power supply. They put in a new amp and the problem has been fixed and all is good again.
RandyR Posted September 21, 2009 #2 Posted September 21, 2009 I'd like to see a schematic of how that could happen? Glad you got your bike back finally.
Yammer Dan Posted September 21, 2009 #3 Posted September 21, 2009 Glad you got it back. Never heard of that one!!
N3FOL Posted September 21, 2009 #4 Posted September 21, 2009 Very interesting fix. Bike start right away due to a radio amplifier Power Supply (?) Electrical problems can sometimes be weird in many ways. Glad to hear that all is well and you got your bike back.
Dragracer Posted September 21, 2009 #5 Posted September 21, 2009 (edited) I too am glad you got your bike fixed, but I too am curious how a defective radio amp can cause the bike to start! And 25 hours to trace bad wiring on our bikes??? In that time he would be able to take the harness off the bike, expose it completely, resistance check all wires and switches! Me thinks they are not telling you the complete story! Edited September 21, 2009 by Dragracer
Ozlander Posted September 21, 2009 #6 Posted September 21, 2009 Me thinks they are not telling you the complete story! Me thinks you're right.
Squeeze Posted September 21, 2009 #7 Posted September 21, 2009 Me thinks you're right. Me too ! I don't what they did, but sure i can't believe any of the Radio Circuits are related anyhow to the Bike's Starter System.
ahoutzer Posted September 21, 2009 #8 Posted September 21, 2009 So… you turn on the radio and the bike starts? I think I saw that on the Three Stooges.
naturbar Posted September 21, 2009 #9 Posted September 21, 2009 if you think about it maybe it doesn't seem all that strange......the radio was stuck on a tune called 'Crank It Up" and the obedient 2nd Gen. was just following orders ;-)...... the keybone is connected to the ignitionbone and the ignitionbone is connected to the ampbone and the ampbone is connected to the starterbone, etc...... guess it could have been worse, when you turned the key it started your wifes car....i know you must be relieved and happy to be riding again. So… you turn on the radio and the bike starts? I think I saw that on the Three Stooges.
BuddyRich Posted September 21, 2009 #10 Posted September 21, 2009 When you hit the start switch on the 2nd gen you are simply grounding a line. That line runs to the starter relay/cutoff and to the MCU. Don't know why they ran it to the MCU ,(Audio system) Maybe to turn it off when the starter is running. But its easy to see on the schematic. They should have removed the start button and then measured resistance to ground. There's only 2 components the start button is tied to. If the MCU went bad it can ground a line. Just depends on what went defective in the Audio Amp.
