6m459 Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 My front right brake has recently begun to squeal quite loudly when I use it. The pads aren't that old. I can't recall what manufacture they are but they were a quality item recommended by a trustworthy wrench at the time of a tire purchase. The rotor looks ok but I have yet to get a measurement of its thickness. Perhaps tomorrow. Assuming the thickness is ok, I am thinking of swapping inboard and outboard pads one for the other on that side. Suggestions? Thanks, Brian H.
bobcat Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 Usually thats a sign of dirt between the pads and rotor...Try blowing the dirt out with pressurized air..If that doesn't work I'd take the pads off and clean them and the rotor with a fine steel wool pad...
Kross Kountry Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 (edited) Both of my front brakes had a squeal and a grind just before I came to a complete stop. I pulled the pads out and used the bench grinder to bevel the leading edge of each pad. Beveling the pad helps to stop the grinding noise as the bike comes to a complete stop. I then used some "Disc Brake Quiet" ( high temp silicon glue) on the back of the pads. This help to stop the vibration that causes the high pitch squeal. On my first test ride I still had some brake noise but it quickly went away. It was most likely casued by the bur on the edge of the pads from beveling them. Hope this helps. Opps. I have to correct something. I used the pad glue on the inside pad only. The outside pad has a shim between the pad and the piston. My bad. Edited September 20, 2009 by Kross Kountry correction
mbrood Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 Kross gave the two classic cures, beveled leading pad edge and some compound on the back (metal). No shims on my bike but the "stop squeel" was definitely needed after new pads were installed.
